So...the first question you are asked there is if you are a local or not. Why? Because if you're not local, you have to pay 3€ per person to visit the area. It would be (kinda)ok to pay, if (and only if) you got something from it. You pay those 3€ just to see something that does not require any maintenence or any special expenses to be kept. Those 3€ include nothing to the tourist. It is ridiculous, really. No tour, no guide, no signs with the story of the place, no nothing. Why do they charge this? I have no clue. If you want to have a walk inside the park (through the woods), you have to pay extra 7€ per person. Just to walk, again with no advantage to the tourist. It is not worth it, really. You pay tourism taxes when you enter the Azores, and still after that, it seems like you have to pay for everything you do. The only thing you will see there is the place where they cook the famous cozido das furnas. Anything else is just landscape. The sightseeing is beautiful, and the place is quiet and welcoming. However, you can have the same experience by stopping the car before you get in the zone, therefore avoiding the payment. This is just a way to make money and nothing else. If they keep going this way, many people will not return because it is just not worth paying again. Who wants everything at once, ends up loosing all they have.

Furnas is the most popular place on the island and unfortunately you can feel and see that. There's not whole lot to do if you're staying for more than two nights. Best recommendation is to visit it maybe for a night stay or just stopover by car and attend some free entry places (like Caldeiras das Furnas). Otherwise, if you're bothered by busy places and want to visit famous attractions, you may be disappointed due to the huge flow of tourists that unfortunately ruin the experience of relaxing and calm atmosphere projected by its beautiful nature. If you're into trekking and avoid the crowds, just go and explore nature on your own which is stunning, however if you're into being surrounded by people, explore and lear what's the best time to visit Terra Nostra or Poça da Dona Beija and be prepared to feel the breath of the person following your back. If authorities in Furnas will continue to be money driven and not care about logistical and administrational things, unfortunately the whole town will become very shallow and bleak.

This is the perfect attraction that you can do in 30 minutes and have a break on the road.

The caldeiras are kind of in the middle of the city and all of a sudden you discover them.
This is really nice arranged and you spend a nice moment walking through them.

Don't rush to the lake or the Park, take time to stop a moment and enjoy the caldeiras.

Hidden valley full of mills and small waterfalls.
It's perfect place to relax, enjoy bubbling and gurgling water from multiple waterfalls. Especially great when out of season as you can enjoy the beauty and atmosphere without crowds of tourists

We walked around the lake and saw where the restaurants put their pots into the ground. We got to see the chapel and enjoy our walk around the lake. We also ate at a lovely Cozido restaurant. A must do for any meat eaters!! I was able to have tuna - thanks Greenzone. We also did a walk to an area with a research center and fountains providing different carbonated waters.

Great full day trip from Ponta Delgada east to Furnas & Tera Nostra Garden, Nordeste, along the north coast with Samual da Silva Regao (Greencorner Tours -(greencornertours@gmail.com;(+351)911936846. Second great trip west to Sete Cidades and Logoa. He grew up on the island, speaks excellent English and is a safe driver - highly recommend! He can tailor an excursion specific to your interests; has a van that carries 8.

Did not realise we had such glorious bubbling hot springs and thermals in Portugal. A large area to see the bubbling hot water and steaming holes. Stalls sold produce cooked in the hot springs. Also not far was the rusty coloured thermal baths for swimming. Only problem was queue for changing room and shower, otherwise idyllic setting in the midst of great greenery,

Caldeira das Furnas unlike the two previous mega-sights of San Miguel Caldera Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo includes in the process of enjoyment not only sight, but also taste and smell. Turn on the taste is to try cozido, a meat baked in volcanic soil with vegetables. Furnas smell that sulfur smell coming from the steaming fumaroles. You can not go close to them because they are adjacent to geysers that emit water with a temperature above 100 degrees. burn is provided. Furnas is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the archipelago, consisting of two calderas. In one of them there is a lake of the same name. The best view is from the Pico do ferro site, which can be reached by car or even on foot. Unfortunately, we arrived in Furnas on a regular bus and had a little time for all the fun. So we took a taxi to Mirador. We managed to look at the geysers (this is not an Icelandic Strokkur!) and breathe sulfur, but we did not try cosido. It takes time. Local chefs haven`t learned how to cook.cozido in the mode of fast food

Love that these caldeiras are close to our hotel. We were able to see the steam from our pool and smell the sulfur. It was only minutes of walking to see these steamy hot boiling caldeiras. There are at least 10 of them within each other and there's also a garden surrounding it. We also witnessed someone cooking bags of corns in these caldeiras which is neat to see. Walked over to the convenient store and got a few corns to try out. Super sweet and delicious. Good snack after a small walk.

Lovely small town, tourist packed as they flood to the thermal pools and the botanical gardens. Yet the town isn’t touristy in the sense of full of knickknack shops (at least we found scarcely any stores. Do walk the street and take notice of the tiles mostly with religious themes decorating the homes. I did did find a large one of a donkey. (I covered the gardens and pool in my review of the Terra Nostra Hotel.) Tourists by far were Portuguese.
