Almost 2.5 hours of boat safari takes you to different parts of the river adjoining the Nagarhole and Bandipur wildlife sanctuaries. Got see some interesting birds - cormorants, eagles, kingfisher etc....Sightings of monkeys, elaphants and wild boards are pretty regular. If you are lucky might see the predators - tiger, leopard and Indian wild dogs

We were staying at Mysore and wanted to go afternoon jeep safari at Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary. Reached the forest in about 2 and half hours. The forest outpost there said they only had 1 bus that got fully booked at 10 am! We went on to Kabini River Lodge who also conducts jeep safari and has about 14 jeeps. But we were told they were meant for people staying in the lodge and other resorts in the area only. Walkins were not allowed! But finally they could accommodate us for the afternoon boat safari. It was good! Kabini river is quite big and very scenic. As the boat leaves the resort jety, we saw farms and villages along the river bank but as the boat went further, the scene changed. There was beautiful forest, with animals along the banks. We saw elephants, deers, gaur, crocodiles, otters and many water birds. The boat safari was from 3.30pm till 6.30 pm and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Cost per person is 1800/-

It is actually very romantic river side. The vast river backwater looks very tranquil. We took a Koracle ride as well during sunset, and it was amazing.

One of the best and my favourite rivers to do a wild life boat safari. The elephant sightings are a guarantee during the summer months.
This is one of the three east flowing rivers of Kerala, the other being Bhavani in Palakkad and Pambar in Iddukki. The river merges with the mighty Kaveri in Karnataka. The river is suited for rafting sports.
Kabini river originates from Wayanad and flows to Karnataka, with a dam, nice meadows on both sides, several rivers flowing to Kabini, is one of the largest river flowing through Wayanad. Locals rowing in small round shaped boats made of bamboo is a breath taking sight.

The Kabini, also called Kabani and Kapila, is a river of southern India.
The backwaters of the Kabini reservoir are very rich in wildlife especially in summer when the water level recedes to form rich grassy meadows.
Now it is considered to be one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in Karnataka, famous for its spectacular wildlife and bird life.

As a typical bangalorean, it is hard to find a place that is quite and serene. This is one such place. If lucky you can spot crocodiles, however there is plenty of birdwatching opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts

We all chose to go on the river safari.
We reached the Kabini river lodge at 2.30 pm after a 2 hours drive from Mysore.
We were group of 6. We paid Rs 1800 per head and got into the boat . The boat left at 3.30 pm with 12 people.
For the first 20 minutes we passed some village area. There after we entered the Nagarhole forest area. Except for some birds , 2 Sambhar deer , a few spotted deer , 3 peacocks and one crocodile , it was an eventless journey. The guide cum motor boat driver followed his routine by taking us around the river showing us both the expanse of Nagarhole and Bandipur sanctuaries.
It was the most disappointing boat ride of my life.
The guide told us that this is not the season for animal watching as the water holes are full of water . It is only in summer , the animals come to the river for water.
Except for the boat ride in the Kabini river, it was a sheer waste of time and money.

We did corocle ride in backwaters, depth was 40ft (Max) in some places. Shallow water near the banks, hence boat cruises were not operating. Kids also enjoyed bullock cart riding & we did cycling along the banks of the river.
