We were on our way up Monteluco for a truffle hunt and stopped here on the way. It's an interesting monastery close to the "Sacred Woods" and you can see the "cave" that St. Anthony stayed in. You can see the whole thing in 20 to 30 minutes or spend longer walking and enjoying the woods.

A visit to this monastery high in the forested hills was a highlight of my trip. You can go for the art, the relics, the chapels, the Basilica, the holy sites of St Francis, or the amazing stone buildings perched on the hill. The monks are helpful and welcoming. And you can stay there for very reasonable rates.

The sanctuary lies at the end of the hike from Spoleto to Monteluco. The trail begins at the Ponte dei Torre across from the Rocca in Spoleto and follows the trail of St Francis. The sanctuary is a beautiful walled structure set beside the Holy Woods. We stumbled upon a room dedicated to St Francis and other Saints from the region. It's apparently from here he established his one room chapel in the near by Benedictine monastery. The gates closed promptly at 4pm. The last KM of the hike is quite steep. If when you come to Strada di Monteluco you carefully follow the road up about 200 meters rather than cross to the trail there is a much easier ascent on the right. Truly beautiful and peaceful spot.
