Magical place
jul 2019. • Samostalno
I love to visit it and watch the sunset, it's a great place, very peaceful and has a nice mountain view. It has a long history and you can feel a special energy. NB: parents should accompany their kids because the road is a bit slippery.

Full of history. Little remains of the fortress, but the whole area is a must-see. Kids should be with their parents as the road are narrow and slippery

An absolutely stunning place

This is one of the hidden gems in Mount Lebanon. If you visit the Chouf Cedar Reserve you can easily combine the visit to Niha on the same trip. The site is part of the Chouf reserve. There is no fee to visit the site. After an easy hike (15-20 mn), you access this remote fortress where the Emir Fakhreddine hid from the Ottomans in the 16th c. The fortress is lodged in the cliff and overlooks the wadi connecting the coast to the Bekaa Valley; hence the strategic importance. Soldiers carved an intricate system to channel rain water into carved cisterns. Part of the trail might scare some as there is no handrail overlooking the cliff. The guide from the reserve will provide an explanation of the site. Since it is part of the reserve the site is very quiet. The scenery is stunning. One of the most beautiful places in Lebanon.

Stunning Views from a Historic Fortress
avg 2017. • Samostalno
The Fort at Niha is where Fakhruddin, a Lebanese national hero, holed up for two years while fighting against the Ottomans. The fort occupies a strategic mountain pass that connects Saida (Sidon) with the Beqaa. The fort was built into a cliffside, and contains massive water cisterns carved out the rock, mills for grain and a clever aqueduct system for bringing water in from a nearby spring. Don't miss the hitching posts for horses carved into the stone walls.

The fort is mostly ruins now, but there is still quite a bit to see here, and the views from the fort are incredible. The site is part of the Chouf Nature Reserve, and the park staff on site are very friendly and knowledgable, and are happy to tell you tales of the fort's history, and point out various features. If you're lucky, you might see a tabsoun (rock hyrax) basking in the sun on the rocks below. These small, herbivorous mammals are protected in the reserve, and are most active at dawn and dusk.

It costs 7000 lira to enter the fort, but your ticket is good for the entire reserve, so make sure to see the other parts as well.

A lovely historical spot in the woods
okt 2016. • Porodično
Our trip was not planned, we just spotted the signs by the road and followed. The last 500 metres take you to an unpaved road, but if you adventurous enough, you can do it.
Niha Fortress is actually one of the access points of Chouf Nature Reserve which means that there is always someone who will charge you 7000 lira entrance fee and (!) will help you with all you want to know and guide you around the ruin if you wish or take you on a hiking trip (50 USD per day).
Niha used to be a fortress - built partly into the rock and partly on the sides of the rocky hill. You can see some remains of the structure - places where the wooden beams where places, wells and storage pits.
It is a truly charming place, nothing huge, but really impressive, calm, with a wonderful view and fresh air.
