Some very talented singers/ musicians who work very hard BUT do NOT go to this show expecting the songs from the film. I didn’t really want to go and hear Tina Turner etc I agree with other reviews- acting was flat and show was quite boring. The last 15 mins of the finale had 50’secs of Mustang Sally, They Call me Mr Pittiful (which we’d heard in the main part of the show) and Try A Little Tenderness. That’s It! I am shocked that they advertise this show and take your money for something it just ISNT!!! A lady 2 seats on spent the whole night on her phone (even during the loud encore) as she was so unimpressed. If I hadn’t been sitting in the middle of the stalls, I would have left early. A HUGE disappointment! Sorry folks- I don’t usually write reviews, but this required it!! ☹️

I go to virtually every musical that comes my way. Having watched the great Youtube clip I thought this is going to be great. I saw this show last night - first half as flat as a pancake couldn't understand most of what was being said in a fake broad Irish accent and the singing underwhelming and the sound from music hardly any oomph in it, It was like listening to a band in the pub but they were in the lounge and you were around the corner with the door shut in the bar. Second half was much the same it only really got going for the last ten minutes finale when in fairness the cast provided the audience what they were waiting for and really should have been doing the majority of the second half. I can't blame the cast and understand the build up plot of forming the band but really - two hours to do this.?

I don't usually review but was so disappointed with this show that I am driven to comment. The Terrible and Poor review statements on this site say it all quite accurately. The show is neither 'wonderfully funny and touching' nor likely to give 'your family some soul' as billed. Low rating reviews may be in the minority but the bus transporting our group of 80 was very mute about it on the way back home which says it all.

As a huge fan of the movie (seen it over and over) I was expecting two things - the story line of the evolution of the band and, of course most of all, the music. I expected to be frequently wanting to, jump out of my seat dancing to the fabulous music from the movie. As it turned out, I seemed to be constantly thinking 'it will get going soon' but it never really did until the very last song and encores. There are only a few tunes from the movie and most songs through the show are truncated and, for me, not too inspiring.
The performers were talented and the sound was fine. I just thought the production was poor, difficult to follow (I think if you didn't know the movie story line you would wonder what was going on). I actually dozed off several times. Numerous times I felt like I was at a high school play.
The last few songs were great.
Didn't deliver what I expected.

I took my mum to see the Commitments and we both really enjoyed it. The cast is excellent, very talented singers and musicians and it didn't matter that I hadn't seen the film or know the storyline. It features some of the classic soul/motown songs that everyone can appreciate regardless of age, although it’s not really suitable for young children as there’s a fair amount of swearing. The theatre itself is beautiful, really ornate, and the finale medley gets everyone out of their chairs and on their feet; first dancing and then in standing ovation. A great option for a feel-good night out.

Loved the film and was really looking forward to the stage show. With the C word being bandied about and more F&&& than I could count I felt very uncomfortable with my 13 year olds. Music was stop/start too much to enjoy and we left at the half time interval. HUGELY disappointing, not to mention that the lower price seats are SO cramped and uncomfortable we were all aching after 20 minutes! Seen FAR FAR better shows than this in the West End and I'm surprised it made it to be honest.

How on earth have these people managed to reduce such a wonderful, funny, poignant film to a raucous sing-along for coach parties?
Where to start?
The sound track was not remotely in the same league as the one in the film. One can only hope that this was for copyright reasons, but, given the total mess they have made of the whole show, I doubt it.
The delicious humour of the original was reduced to an unfunny and coarse succession of shouted banalities.
The fact that this was a group of youngsters from the rough end of Dublin, who for a few fleeting weeks of their lives were able to escape into a more exciting world, was completely bypassed by this soulless nonsense.
The whole raison d'etre of the last part of the film was that 'Joey the Lips' a trumpeter who'd (dubiously) claimed that he'd worked with the greats, and had promised that his 'mate' Wilson Picket was going to turn up at their biggest gig, didn't even feature in this version.
The poignant (!) ending where the manager, Jimmy Rabbit, was walking back after a group argument and was stopped by a car taking Wilson to the gig was (obviously) missed by this load of codswallop.
If you've watched the film, avoid this show like the plague.
If you haven't, then you could just about sit through this rubbish in order to to dance at the songs towards the end.
Do they do minus points on Trip Advisor?

My husband and I were so looking forward to this as we love the film so much. We were sat waiting and waiting for the fan music from the film, as this to us was what the commitments was all about. It just never happened for us. When eventually they sang some of the soundtrack at the end, it was all too late. This was because they lost us after the first 10 minutes of the performance. Had we had aisle seats, we both agreed we would have left part way through the first half. It is just not true to the film, so if your a huge fan of this, don't waste your money!!

This is, without doubt, the worst piece of musical theatre I've had the misfortune of sitting through. First of all, the story line was essentially non-existent. There was absolutely no attempt to use the music to tell any kind of story. Instead, the majority of the 'musical' is made up of a series of rehearsals (of which the audience rarely gets to hear a complete song.) The attempts at Irish accents were cringe-worthy and were, in some cases, completely incomprehensible. Equally cringe-worth were the attempts at humour, a strange mix of 'laddish banter', swearing and immature gags. How this production has maintained a slot at the Palace is completely beyond me. That being said, the rest of the audience did seem to enjoy it, particularly when it effectively turned into a gig in the second half. If that's what you're after, I would suggest saving some money and going to a local tribute band gig instead (which might actually allow for a worth production to take its slot at the Palace). Miss Saigon tickets are available for the same, if not better price, and offer unparalleled levels of talent, creativity and skill (as do all other West End shows I have seen, compared to this production).

I'm a big big fan of musicals in general, as well as of the Commitments film. I was really excited when I heard they were making the Commitments into a musical.

The film, if you haven't seen it, is fantastic: it's very very funny, and shows the dynamics of a group of down-and-outs who come together through their band. Difficult to explain. Go and watch it.

In comparison the musical just made me cringe. Firstly, what WERE those accents? If you can't do an Irish accent properly then it's probably best not to try. The story completely failed to show any depth of relationship between the characters, and it was often difficult to work out who was meant to know how. The humour was definitely lost on the night I went.

The whole thing just felt extremely rushed, and the production clearly viewed the story as an obscacle to singing the songs at the end. The songs were sung very well, but it just felt like watching an expensive tribute band.

We left feeling pretty disappointed. It's a shame, because it could have been so much better. I'd steer clear of this one. There are so many great musicals in the West End.
