The Wurttemberg State Theatres - formerly called "Royal Court Theatres" opened in 1912 are a unique culture house constructed by Max Littmann. Close by is still my school "Königin-Katharina-Stift". So I had even as a child the possibility to visit that great building very often. Later on over 25 years as a frequent guest in row 11. This gives an idea how I put this place on top of my culture life: Opera and Ballet. The reconstruction to get rid of the more "cold atmosphere time" in 1982 brought back all the sensitive feelings which are so intensive in this special interior. The house got a lot of awards and keeps hopefully its authentic face for another hundred years with such a beautiful view from the public garden with the great two castles near by.

The ballet is world renown and the opera the most honored in the German-speaking parts of Europe (Germany, Austria, part of Switzerland) with an unheard of 7 "opera of the year" awards while most operas have never won once. We had a subscription to the opera for 8 years and immensely enjoyed it. Some of the stagings are very innovative and brilliant. The building is the only significant building in Stuttgart which had only minimal damage from WW-II. This is the largest three part theater in Europe hosting plays, opera and ballet. A tour of the building is excellent, but probably will be only in German. You'll be on the stage to see how it is set up, see the storage facilities, painting facilities, and costume making facilities and actually be able to observe some of these people at work. Very interesting, and by far the best opera tour that I've had including the Vienna and Sydney opera houses. But the best is to attend one of the excellent performances. Actual latest visit was July, 2012.

Before we went to the Opera House we learned, that it is one of the best opera house in Germany, won already 5 times the "Best Opera House" award in the german speaking countries in europe. The house is one of the very few building which was not too much damaged in the WW II. We had a premiere of Wagner Tristan and Isolda. Best german Opera House, Wagner it must be something special. Unfortunately the performance was very very poor. The singers were weak, the regie was terrible. After the first two act we went away with a lot of other people. It was a big disappointment for us. The nex tevening we had a Gluck Orpheo and Euridice. This was the performance where we beleived everything which was told about this ensemble. Excellent voices, excellent director, beautiful balett too.

Tickets only come on sale 2 months before a particular show and they sell out quickly. Supposedly you can buy them by phone (no one answered), by email or on line, but I was told that the best way to get tickets was to go to the ballet ticket office in Stuttgart which opens at 10. I arrived by 9 and there were only 2 people ahead of me. The man in front of me told me the line is usually much longer. I got 2 tickets and checked the online availability in the afternoon. They were almost sold out. I hope the ballet is ultimately worth the effort of getting the tickets.

A very beautiful building dating back 100 years. Very kind and helpful staff. You can rely on the German high standard of the performance. Is there any better way to spend the evening?

Opernwelt - which means opera world - every year puts together the best performances on German , which means Germany,Austria, Switzerland. Stuttgart Opera House won already the year's best titel several times.
Yesterday we saw Bellini Il Puritani. Excellent singers, beautiful chor and magical orchester. Great evening again.

We saw 'Was hält uns zusammen wie ein Ball die Spieler einer Fußballmannschaft?'.
Although the play was somewhat strange, the visit was pleasant. Very friendly staff and good actors. Very fair prices.

We watched the most popular play at the Staatstheater. «Faust I» from Goethe. Although the production was not quite my type, we enjoyed the evening, since the piece is very humorous but also touching. There was a 15 Minute break which you can enjoy with a beer or a glass of white wine at the Bar.
The setting is very modern, everything looks exquisite.

It is in Stuttgart downtown, if you are in Europe on the Summer time, this place will be always full of people.
They like to go there to relax... have a beer with friends and talk.
Most of people there, are young people, making young things.. dancing, playing some guitars and enjoying the summer and their vacations.
