The museum of Cádiz is a fun place to spend an afternoon. The history of the city is fascinating, beginning with the Phoenician arrival from whence the name Gadir originates (meaning stronghold/sea wall), supplanted by the Romans, who , using the original Phoenician roit, referred to the city as Gades and then, over the more modern period, the name morphed into the Cádiz we know now. The museum has a range of artifacts dating across all these periods and is free at present, although the artwork area is daily currently not open and charges may apply when that area is once again accessible.

The Cadiz museum includes much like art, archeology, and more. We enjoyed it although the art section was closed for some reason. Otherwise a good but mixed collection. We enjoyed the Phoenician and Roman sections.

This museum is incredible! There are extensive displays of beautiful artifacts! I was most impressed with the pottery and the mosaic. The security guards were most helpful in locating a specific painting by Joaquin Sorolla that I wanted to see. This is a must see!

This is an excellent local Museum with some stunning finds from Phoenician and Roman times which are well displayed. Surprisingly little about the Islamic period though. There is also some excellent art works but what made this a stand out experience was the touring exhibition of "In wine truth'. This was a series of contemporary and amusing photographs and paintings based on traditional pictures. It was stunning - an excellent and interesting museum

Great museum. Free entry. 3 floors, the ground floor has an impressive collection of Phoenician and Roman remains. The second floor is mostly Spanish art, and the 3rd floor is dedicated to traditional puppets, which is a lot more interesting than it sounds! Definitely worth an hour of your time, we really enjoyed it.

A quiet cool and lovely museum

Archeological part was very good and between the official website of the museum (English) and google translate app, I got some understanding of the fascinating artifacts. Sorry my understanding of Spanish is very limited, but hey technology is here to help us.

A very nice Roman mosaic but also earlier stuff (neolithic, bronze age etc) all laid out with grace and space.

The paintings were interesting (church, renaissance) but did not interest me as much as the archeological section.

Great place and peaceful too.

The free museum draws heavily on the archaeology of the area with displays of Roman and Phoenician remains, including two spectacular Phoenician coffins. Upstairs there are rooms of art with works by Murillo and Zurbaran and with modern art on the second floor. Allow an hour for the visit.

The small museum charts the history of Cadiz and houses the largest art galleries in Andalusia. The ground and three floors are full of paintings, pottery and mosaic artefacts, and on the third floor is a collection of puppets made for village fiestas. Excellent value for free admission, worth a visit.

First of all, the entrance was free, so if one has time, then I would go, but if you're short on time in Cadiz, I would likely invest it on other places. Small museum of mostly artefacts. The staff at the entrance were welcoming. The signs are mostly only in Spanish - which I can read - but would not be helpful to many others. The third floor display of modern art would have interested me, but it was closed for some reason.

Found it all a little too beige with mainly stone artefacts on display. Eyes dilated at the art on the walls. Shame the other Cadiz museum was closed for renovation otherwise we’d have gone there (sorry)! Our favourite section was the old photographs in the sparsely decorated building adjacent.
