It’s a tremendous monument with a provenance extending back almost 800 years. Albeit of necessity modified and revamped since.

Steeped in atmosphere and longevity is the lovely Plaza. Old stone and steps lead to the holy place.

Outstanding within are the multitude of columns and arches, all in stone and brick. From certain perspectives it resembles a forest of curving structures.

Along the nave is a marvellous vista leading to the glorious high altar that is suffused with gilt and ornamentation.

A bit hard to find - go inside, buy you ticket, go up to the next floor - interesting - go up to the next floor and WOW. A small chapel - Baroque in style with paintings by Goya, Gonzalez Velazquez and Jose Camaron. Then go down the stairs to the basement to the plainness and simplicity of a church for inner contemplation. Very unusual and a fascinating story to go with it.

We did a quick couple hour day trip to Cádiz and walked by this church and thought we'd pop in. Having just arrived from the US days prior, we had no idea that it was a Sunday, a little after noon, when we stopped by. There were still some people gathering their things and standing around talking but all-in-all, it was fairly quiet and there were a few other tourists looking around as well.

No cost to enter (at least immediately following service on Sunday). It's interesting how this used to be a cathedral and now is a church. Anyhow, it's a pretty church and a quick 5 minute walk through, or less, if you just want to glance around but nothing spectacular. We also hadn't seen the Cathedral at this point so there was no point of comparison.

When you enter this church, the first thing to notice are the multiple domes that form the roof. Otherwise I didn't see any other features that showed it was a mosque before it was turned into a church. When you climb the tower of the Cathedral you have a nice look at the domes from above. Don't miss that view!

The church is behind the Cathedral of Cadiz to the left and up the stairs to the left. The altar was quite different from others I have seen with Christ carrying his cross and Mary holding the shroud with Jesus face on it. Access is free. We were ther for under 15 minutes.

We visited this after having seen the nearby cathedral, and liked this much better. Not only is this a building on a human scale, but it is clearly a church much visited – and, no doubt, loved – by local people. The columns in the nave, with their circular Moorish arches, are pleasing to the eye, as are the plain white, concave ceilings that the arches enclose. This church has ancient roots.
The imagery and iconography are visually stunning, although I do have reservations about the preponderance of waxwork-like religious images that seem to be popular in this part of Spain, and were evident here too. I noticed that several devout visitors were keen to touch the hems of garments draped around these images, as if they somehow possessed magical or mystical properties. A culturally interesting experience…..

This was significantly smaller than the near-by Cathedral but the interior decoration was more imposing and spectacular and well worth a visit. It was built in 1263 on the site of a Muslim Mosque by none other than Alfonso X the Wise and has undergone many modifications since .Definitely worth a look inside and it is free.

Having put our heads around the door of the main cathedral and not feeling the atmosphere the opposite could be said of this place. Beautiful religious figures and works of art but above all a most spiritual place. I was fascinated by some of the rituals we saw there, the leaving of herbs ( parsley?) in front of one figure, the significance of the red carnations, the touching of the robes and the kissing of the glass windows of certain figures was very moving. A very special place in Cadiz

We stumbled upon this house of treasures between the Roman theatre and the cathedral. They were preparing for a religious parade so the statues were dressed quite audibly and the platforms/trolleys were decorated in velvet with silver vases. So sumptuous.
