We spent about three hours walking, talking and learning with hometown guide Miquel. He clearly loves Girona and sharing his city with visitors. The pace was laid back and the content and scenery along the way was perfectly pitched. We were particularly interested in the rich Jewish history there and Miquel didn't disappoint.

In addition to the planned tour, it was great to have the opportunity to ask questions and hear his perspectives about the region - politics, art. culture, etc.. It's the kind of walking tour that can be whatever you want to make of it. Plan ahead and you won't be disappointed!

We took the Jewish Heritage walking tour with Joachim and he was nothing short of terrific. He knows Girona's history and culture as well as its Jewish background, and walking with him through the old and narrow streets, museums, churches, baths and other sights is like taking a stroll with a young graduate school professor who loves his subject. Joachim met us right on time at the train station and was very attentive to our interests. Spend a half day or day with him and you won't be disappointed.

We spent a very enjoyable and informative day with Miquel.

Miquel has taken a deep interest in the Jewish heritage of Catalonia and is currently learning Hebrew. He gave us an interesting insight into the Jewish history in Besalu, Girona and Barcelona up to the Spanish Inquisition, as well as other interesting background facts into Catalonia and the Catalonian people.

We were a group of 6 travelling together, 2 from UK and 4 from USA. When 2 of our number fell ill during the afternoon (one with an injured knee and the other suffering from a fever), Miquel dealt admirably with the situation, arranging temporary accommodation for the 2 poorly members whilst showing the others around Girona. If there was more time, our group would have liked to have spent longer in Girona, but because we had been to the Dali Museum (well worth seeing) in the morning, together with dealing with the casualties, that was not really possible.

Miquel is very friendly, good fun and personable. His English is excellent and we were well satisfied with our tour.

We were in Barcelona for a week with our teenage boys and friends suggested we visit Girona for a day. Am really glad we did. Its a beautiful city with a perfectly preserved medieval center. Just a convenient 1.20 hours away from BCN by the very comfortable MD trains.

I think the reason we had such a good time in Girona was our guide Joaquim (of Girona Tours) We have traveled a fair bit in Europe but it is rare to find someone so intelligent, warm and responsive. He helped us with the train schedules, recommended an excellent restaurant for lunch, was perfectly flexible when we lingered over our coffee and made sure he dropped us off safely at the station in time for our train back.

His knowledge of the town, its history and architecture is quite amazing. He brought that era alive for us and even my hard-to-please teenagers who initially protested at the idea of '3 hours amongst some ruins' were enthralled.

Highly recommended!

After meeting us at the train station, Joaquim took us on a 3 hour walking tour through the old, narrow streets of Givona. Highlights included the old Jewish quarters, a Turkish bath and a cathedral. His depth of knowledge of history and architecture was impressive. He spoke perfect English with great enthusiasm. After the tour he pointed out some nice restaurants for a leisurely lunch before we took the train for an hour and a half trip back to Barcelona.

Whether you take a private tour or own you own, Gironas is a must see. Such a beautiful, cozy and warm place, with nice and wonderful local people.

One day should be sufficient but you can also stay if you wish but if I were you I would visit it during a day tour. We did not take any tours but easily reached there with the train. Visited the center, the cathedral and ate and then wondered around. Such a lovely place!

Joaquim Perez Losada was an ideal tour guide for this ancient City with architecture and history from many cultures, Christian and Jewish alike. His background as a civil engineer and his passion for architectural styles gave depth to the experience. We used flashlights to see hidden treasures in dark cathedral, ducked into doorways during rainstorms and had an extraordinary time on this day trip from nearby Barcelona.
We've already sent other friends to Girona and they shared our enthusiasm for Joaquim's ability to show off this remarkable city.

If you are going to Barcelona be sure to book this wonderful tour in advance with Joaquim at http://www.gironatours.com. It is an ancient city that is a must to visit. The Jewish Quarter, the Jewish History Museum, the Arab Baths, the Churches, Cathedrals, fort, etc. are all amazing. It is very easy to take the 80-90 minute Renfe train ride to Girona from either Barcelona-Sants or Barcelona-Passeig De Gracia. The trains run often. http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/cercanias/barcelona/index.html
I had read about how the tour operators that originate in Barcelona often just drop you in Girona with a very brief overview and then leave you on your own to walk around. If you do that you might as well forget going since it will be a waste of your time. Having a local authorized tour guide such as Joaquim walk you to and through the sites and explain each in detail makes the visit truly worthwhile. Joaquim met us at the train station and we went non-stop the entire time so bring good walking shoes or sneakers. We selected the 3 hour Girona Walking Tour. He made it feel like a trip back in time. There was no dragging us to tourist trap shops either. Girona should definitely be a stop. It is great history and preserved really well.
