Neighborhood: Colonna
Frantic fashionistas, pedicured politicos, goal-oriented tourists, and on-the-go locals cross paths every day in Colonna, a delightful chaos in the very center of the city. Even though it has some of the city’s loveliest sites—a 2nd century column, Belle Epoque shopping center, and a magnificent Baroque parliament building—Colonna is not just another pretty face, but the cosmopolitan eye of Rome’s cultural storm. Colonna can safely say it has the best of Rome: museums, boutiques, window displays, restaurants, cafes, and people watching.

Beautiful church in Rome with a long history. The church is currently undergoing restoration. Thanks to the girl who was working on the restoration and explained the paintings to me

Beautiful church with an English language mass in the center of Rome. The Irish priests were very welcoming to our family.

The church is not very big, but certainly unique and really well inserted in the context of the surrounding square, which has been redesigned in recent years rather badly.
It is characterized by the beautiful and very particular bell tower in red bricks in the background.
Originally built in the eighth century, it was then modified in the second half of the nineteenth century, with the structure that we can admire today.
Among the architects who participated in the construction of the church are to remember Carlo Maderno, Carlo Rainaldi, M. De Rossi.
Very interesting is the courtyard with the archaeological finds posted on the walls. Both externally and internally it is really well cared for.
Worth a stop.

This church is located at the back of a courtyard across from the piazza with the same name. The courtyard itself is fascinating and every wall has relics of stonework of former parts of the building.
Stepping into the church there is a powerful atmosphere of holiness, difficult to describe but you have to sit and pray and take time to contemplate baptism and what that means to YOU personally.

Hi. just a note to say this is a beautiful Irish run church in the centre of Rome. Also run by very nice priests and brothers. Thanks for the peace and quiet from the hustle and bustle of beautiful Rome. also the Mass is done very nicely.

As you walk in, pay attention to all the decor in the courtyard, excavated stone reliefs from under San Silvestro is on display. Even medieval frescoes are on walls outside the church. Then you walk into gaudy, gorgeous, Michelangelo influenced interior. The gilding is incredible. Paintings predominantly from the 17th century. The high altar completed in 1518. The real kicker, in a side entrance to the church... the skull (or part of the skull) of John the Baptist!! Is it really? I don't know, it could be! It's really old, I know that. Anyway, the baroque flair of this magnificent church is not to be missed.

Very unique church in the fact that you first pass through the front facade, then enter an open air atrium (where the walls are lined with fragments from Roma Antica) before proceeding through the doors into the main sanctuary. The current structure dates back to the 17th century. The interior is richly decorated, featuring lots of marble, frescoes and gilding. The side chapels contain several impressive sculptures and paintings.

Easy to just walk by this church as it is hidden back in a courtyard. The courtyard itself is very interesting as there are many old pieces outside. Incredible inside

Located in the heart of Rome, this gem of a church, which dates back to the 8th century, was beautifully rebuilt at the very end of the 16th century and is a perfect example of the most lavish Baroque style.

You start in the tiny courtyard with the relics from the Catacombs on display and then enter the church completely unprepared for the opulence of its stunning interior. Everything is gorgeous: the ceiling, the chapels, the high altar... marble, gold, frescoes are so abundant but not overwhelming.

And the Romanesque campanile dates back to the 12th century.

How nice to discover such a treasure and admire it without oppressive tourist crowds!

This Church is very special to me as I was married there 38 years ago. From the minute you walk into the courtyard you are surrounded by history & amazing art. Once inside the church itself you immediately are in awe of your surroundings.Beautiful paintings & an a glorious altar, just breathtaking & spectacular. We were greeted by Fr John who showed us our wedding details in the records from 1981.A wonderful man who gives his time freely with a smile. To the left of the main door is a quiet area for prayer in front of the relic of John the Baptist.I would recommend a visit to this special place when in Rome.
