Como's historic area is quite an easy walk with access to all areas not hard to negotiate. If depends on your state of mind and what you have available. You could spend 30 minutes and see some wonderful architecture or you could spend hours and have a nice meal, shopping and photo opportunities.

This is the beautiful city of Como, in Northern Italy, exactly in Lombardia. The lake is beautiful and the downtown is magic.

I spent a quick 4 day Long weekend in lake como whilst in between meetings in Milan. It lived up to the hype: stunning in every way, and the atmosphere is divine in the summer. Great al fresco dining, beautiful walks through the cobbles streets and tempting shops. Just relax and enjoy!

A perfect apartment close to duomo and the ferries. Quiet and spacious, spotlessly clean and well equipped. Fabriziio was very helpful and met us promptly. Highly recommended.

We meandered through downtown Como our last day in town and discovered many interesting sights. We were impressed with the Como Cathedral (Duomo), Piazza di San Fedele with it's many bars, restaurants and the Basilica di San Fedele, the walkway along the lake, and many other bars and cafes all over town.

Lake Como's city walk is peppered with grand buildings with splendid architectures and historic relevance.
Broletto, neoclassical-styled Centro Storico, Piazza Alessandro Volta, Basilica di San Fedele, Cathedral of Como with awesome sculptural reliefs, Basilica di Sant'Abbondio
are several landmarks and spots that should not be missed while exploring the streets and neighborhoods of Como.

Charming streets, colorful buildings, small alleys and delicious food in the nice restaurants all just a few steps away from the magnificent view of the lake. Do not miss this nice place and be prepared for the hot summer days.

The title's statement deserves some explanation.
It is indeed true that almost nothing has survived from the Roman age and that outstanding testimonies of the Middle Ages are well present, but they are inserted in a building layout that predominantly belongs to the early modern age. Nonetheless the gridiron layout of the streets, and the walls that still surround the ancient center on significant sections, are the elements that mainly preserve the memory of the most ancient eras, respectively Roman and medieval.
The fact that Como was flourishing in the Middle Ages, but that its size didn't "explode", allows the legibility of these walls even today, as it hasn't been replaced by later larger walls (as it happened in the city of quite another size at the end of the Middle Ages, such as Milan, Bologna or Florence); and in turn these medieval walls roughly follow the form of the Roman ones (as erected starting from 59 BC).
In itself this readability is a reason for enjoyment for the visitor; but the value of the buildings in the center itself comes to increase the enjoyment. The majestic Duomo, the venerable San Fedele church, Porta Torre (ie, the turreted gate on the southern side of the city) are the most striking medieval elements; many noble palaces from a later period are also appreciable.
To the north, between the Duomo and the lake, Como has not been spared by some "sventramenti" (literally "guttings", that is, destruction and reconstruction) dating back to the Fascist period, but they haven't eliminated the physiognomy of the center.
Not to be underestimated then the fact that the north side of the historic center is a short distance from the lakefront, with what follows in terms of beautiful landscape; nor that today almost the entire historic center is closed to car traffic, favoring strolling.
