Top ways to experience Cannaregio
The area
Neighborhood: Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

    Good authentic neighborhood
Nice neighborhood! Still a hidden gem in Venice not too much overrun by tourists I would say. On Saturday night some places were full but the vibes were good. Not the chaotic touristic vibe that you get from St Mark Square or places near it. The establishments seemed more authentic and catering to local tourists. Many bars and good restaurants. The place is also historically relevant. Refreshing.

    Wedding’s take priority over Guests
3 night City Break at Hotel Principe for my husbands birthday, via Grant Simpson @ Travel Counsellors. Hotel is on Grand Canal & pretty central. Train Station also nearby. Room was upgraded & overlooked Canal. We were thoroughly enjoying our stay, until on nights 2 & 3 of our stay, Hotel Staff refused to serve us a drink & prohibited access to the Terrace, as there were Weddings taking place (1 on each day/evening), so Guests were not permitted to use this facility!! There were no signs to advise this, nor was it mentioned at Booking! Complaint to Terrace Bar Manager elicited shrug of shoulders! This Hotel is not cheap & obviously does not value its Guests & appears to be unable to balance the 2!

    Most Beautiful Neighbourhood
This was hands down the most beautiful walk we took in Venice, which is saying something. Most of the neighbourhood is empty of tourists, so you have wide streets almost to yourself, and authentic local businesses and restaurants. If you're looking for an interesting route to walk, you can start from the Nove ACTV stop (the one that goes to Murano and San Michele Cemetery). Santa Maria Assunta Church is only one Euro to enter and well worth it. Then head west to Ponte de Chiodo, the last bridge in Venice with no railing, and past Scuola Grande della Misericordia, the building that formerly housed a basketball court and the ballroom in The Tourist movie with Johnny Depp. There's a boat parking lot and a bridge over rio dei Muti where you may get lucky and see some cats hanging out before passing Tintoretto's house and heading to Campo dei Mori to see the turbaned statues and have a drink in the shade. From there you can head to the Jewish Ghetto and explore, then emerge back into the flow of tourists at Ponte delle Guglie, where there's a park, restaurants, and plenty of souvenir shops (though the ones between the Ghetto and Guglie Bridge are more affordable). There are also more churches to pop into on the way to the ACTV stops in front of the train station. You can hop on line one and sail down the Grand Canal to St. Mark's Square or wherever you'd like to go. This itinerary takes about half a day, but you could make it a full day by seeing the synagogue and museum and stopping for lunch, or make it shorter by window shopping and not popping into every church. I'd highly recommend Cannaregio to get away from the crowds and experience a more authentic side of Venice, as well as find some very reasonably priced glass pieces. This walk combined with Ca Rezzonico, Museo Fortuny, and St. Mark's would be my ideal one day in Venice.

Love this area to stay and visit
We stayed in this area in an Airbnb and it was wonderful. The area is nice it’s quieter but also busy at times on the weekend nights but it’s nice to see that wonderful shops and wonderful restaurants. Lots to see and do but getting out of the busy areas of St Mark is nice so this was perfect! Highly recommend this area as the vaporetto is close by as well so easy to get anywhere.

Especially the area around the railwaly station and the Strada Nova are very touristy and a hotspot of overtourism. A lot of souvenir shops and souvenir sellers on the street. Some parts of the backside are in opposite to that really quiet.

Most tourists pass through this district without paying much attention to it. Canna (reed) regio is large and still contains quite a few residential areas criss crossed by narrow canals. Ca d'Oro (museum in a 15th century palace) and churches from the same period, as well as the Jewish quarter are among the highlights to visit. Very few trees or green spaces. Personally I liked the walk along the 1 km long northern quay called Fondamente Nove bordering the lagoon and opposite San Michele.

We have stayed 3 nights at the small but great Venice Maggior Consiglio hotel (see separate review) , which enable us to stroll and discover the small uncrowded alleys and narrow canals of Cannaregio . Very relaxing and yet close to the bustling attractions of Venice : Shopping , restaurants, cafes and bars .
Cantina Vecia Carbonera , is among others - a place we loved (see separate review).
Cannaregio is definitely a must (bring your cameras along).

This is my favourite part of Venice. Much less crowded than San Marco you can often be the only ones wandering the gorgeous narrow streets. There are many small, very good restaurants & shops mainly frequented by locals. However, you are also very close to the main shopping area and the Rialto. Plus fabulous views of the beautiful Cimitero di San Michele across the Lagoon. We arrived on a freezing, dark, misty evening and it was magical.

Absolutely glorious area of Venice which must be visited. It can be a little quieter in this part of Venice which enhances the joy of just meandering the canal side walks. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes to enjoy in the area, too. A tour of the Jewish Quarter is well worthwhile and highly recommended especially if prearranged with a qualified guide.

This is not in the thick of action but there are still enough eateries and shops to spend an hour or so walking around. It definitely does not have the crowds of Rialto or the more popular spots, but it's really pleasant especially if your hotel is in the vicinity, and there and you want to have a nice meal without having to squeeze with crowds of people. I like it!

nice small restaurations, discret in the corners, nice smaller stores. What wonderful fish we had seen. Walking around and discovering just what you like to do in Venice without crods around your feet.

I stayed in a hotel in this area. It was such a lively area. We had everything we needed, right out the door. There was plenty of dining options, shops, souvenir vendors and great things to walk by. I wouldn't hesitate to stay in Cannaregio again.
