- LisaPisa2Brooklyn, New York30 contributionsMagnificent Teatro Greco - Awe inspiring. The Teatro Greco (and the rest of the Parco Neapolis, especially the Ear of Dionysus) was a memorable experience. I appreciated that the theatre was being used for live performances and the seat coverings and equipment just added to the awesomeness of this site for me. It seemed to me more authentic than just looking at rocks and trying to imagine how it was used. Please don't let these modifications stop you from visiting. And if you have a chance to get tickets to a show (which I did) it will be an evening you will never forget!Visited June 2023Traveled with friendsWritten July 4, 2023
- Travelers00599 contributionsExcellent Guide for the Archeological Park in SiracusaWe were able to spend 2 hours with a fabulous guide - Gianluca Panarello. Our hotel found him for us and we are so glad they did! Gianluca, whose English is excellent, made the history of the Archeological Park come alive. Other reviewers have referred only to the Greek Theater, but there is so much more in the 80 acre park. When you go with a well informed, expressive guide like we did, you are able to imagine the events that occurred and understand the reasons behind them. We had attended the Odyssey opera performed in the Greek Theater the previous night (which was fantastic) and had walked by many ruins with no concept of their history and meaning. Returning the next morning with Gianluca was very interesting! We highly recommend arranging for his services.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 6, 2023

We went on this tour eagerly expecting a spectacular display of Ancient Greek and Roman architecture. And from a distance on the hop on hop off bus it looked spectacular. However the management of the site was appalling.
When we left the bus we followed the signs to the ticket office, and had to wait for ages while one man tried to process a large number of tourists on a system that was wholly inadequate. Finally, clutching our tickets, we were directed across a busy road only to discover a brand new nearly empty ticket office with six attendants! Why were we directed to this in the first place.
Then, on the walk into the park there were a number of sings directing visitors onto short, medium and long walks around. Sadly, once we entered the park virtually all signage vanished, and those that did exist were virtually pointless. It was even difficult to find the way to the massive amphitheatre; tourists were helping each other in the absence of official guidance. The downloaded guide was equally unhelpful.
A truly disappointing experience

The whole theatre was covered over with temporary concert seating so you couldn't see much of the old structure. Avoid visiting in concert season ! The all-in ticket price for the archaeological park should probably be reduced to reflect this - given that is supposed to be 'the jewel in the crown' of the whole site. There should also be some signage to advise of this and to manage visitors' expectations.

Great site, loved wandering around among the trees. Greeks really chose their locations. However, it is aimed at tour buses with guides. If you are alone on foot, it's very confusing, with very little and contradictory info, like playing The Crystal Maze. This was fine as it was an overcast day - if it had been sunny, I would never have seen the Teatro Greco as I would have had heat exhaustion long before I found it. I only found the Ear of Dionysus by following the sound of an entire Italian tour group testing the acoustics of the cave with an enthusiastic rendition of 'Volare'. Very memorable day, loved the view from the top of the amphitheatre, though not as spectacular as that in Taormina, and the caves with fountains at the back.

Poor organisation . A few of the most important sights were cordoned off which was very disappointing. The description of the sights are poor . We did visit an exhibition of coins which was in complete darkness and was quite dangerous as there were steps going down to the next level .

Quite awful. The architectural features are entirely obscured by the stage set, seating and lighting set up for a stage production. If you search you will see a tiny sign at the ticket office telling you it is partially obscured (it isn’t it’s fully obscured). Don’t go

Agree with the other recent reviewers from the last 6 months. We visited on 31st July 2022. The main attraction of the Greek ancient theatre was spoiled by it covered in lots of temporary benches and lighting structures for the concerts. The rest of the site is interesting to walk around and the acoustic cave shaped like an ear is huge and mind blowing that it was hand carved by slaves. The Roman ruins alongside are also well preserved. Parking at the site is only available along the road.

We enjoyed stopping here during our stay in the area. It would have been great to plan ahead and attend a performance here but we did not plan ahead. If you are there at the right time and have time, I think this would be fun. The remains of the theater are interesting and the fact that it is still used at certain times for performances makes it special.

Price is now $16.50 euro per adult!!! Not worth it. Much of the park is roped off, trails are closed. Could not go inside the caves. Instead of a discount for closing much of the site, the price was increased. Putting it in perspective, price for Pompeii is 10 euro and much, much better. If you have been to Pompeii, Herculean, or other ruins (Ephesus, Parthenon) you will be disappointed.

The heat in August in Italy is intense. We battled the streets to get to the Greek Theatre. Long queues to get the tickets. Passport numbers needed to be imputed for the teenagers to get their reduced rates.
Once in, signage was bad. We just wanted to see the theatre, but had to follow a path that took us round to all sorts of other “points of interest”. Exhausted and hot we finally managed to get to the theatre….which is still in use, but because of this 90% of it is covered in wooden planks of wood and the rest us taken by a wooden stage. It looked nothing like the photos we had seen. Sorely disappointed.

A fantastic site you really get a feel for the Greeks here. I can imagine Socrates orating here or watching The Furies (Greek version of Eastenders). Strangely best viewed from the top looking down, you a little of its majesty standing at the bottom. If no one is around try sitting on the original seating. Some jobsworth told us to get off which was odd because steps had been made to reach the seating.

I've purchased a ticket for a performance in June. It says to collect my ticket at the venue but I have seen conflicting reviews of it's location, saying it's nowhere near the theatre. Any ideas please?
