L’Aquila is a fantastic city and Basilica San Bernardino is, even though a little offsite of track, is a good place to go - especially in the evenings interesting people and many young people are hanging a round.

I have visited Basilica di San Bernardino soon after re-opening (after a devastating earthquake on 6th. April 2009). Beautiful cathedral!!! Restored to a genuine state with greatest care and attention!!! Thanks to all people who were involved in the restoration process to bring back to life this marvelous cathedral!!! Words to describe this architectural masterpiece would be superficial!!! Just go there and see it with your own eyes! An absolute "Must See" on L'Aquila trip!!! Enjoy!!!

This is a beautiful basilica that was only reopened in 2015 after a violent earthquake damaged it in 2009. The highlight in entering this church would be the Mausoleum of St. Bernardino (or Bernadine) of Siena, which can be found at the fifth chapel to the right. Entrance to the church is free!

Basilica di San Bernardino survived the earthquake very well. There is very minor damage to inside of the dome. It is very light and inviting and beautiful! Great architecture and detail. One of my favorites.

As by a miracle, the church survived well the 2009 earthquake and has beautiful high decorated ceilings and the tomb of Saint Bernard which is definitely worth a visit.
Also the stairs that lead up to the Church are impressive.

This is one of the churches that has reopened after the earthquake. Inside this large barok church, the attention goes to the impressive ceiling of the nave, as well as the shrine for a local saint.

This is a gem in Europe! A wonderful & rich example of the renaissance & baroque architecture marvels of the mid 1400s!
Inside, the altar, the nave (one of the longest), the frescoes, the tiled grounds & the gilded roof are to be appreciated in every detail! Not to miss the fabulous organ!
Outside, the majestic & impressive facade depicting not only la Madonna but San Bernardino & San Francesco d'Assissi, is made of stone & was started in the 1500s & rebuilt in the 1700s. One of the main characteristics is that has 3 different style layers from the bottom up: Doric, Ionic & Corinthian.
It reopened in 2015 after being partially damaged in the 2009 earthquake but now the society of L'Aquila can once again hold beautiful weddings, religious & cultural events!
A must visit!

A must place to visit in the town of L'Aquila. The basilica has just been re-opened (several years of reconstruction after the earthquake of 2009)! It is a master piece. My advice: get a guide & read all the information about San Bernardino di Siena and the Renaissance artists that built this Basilica over 30 yrs starting in 1454!

After 6 years after the earthquake l'aquila is starting to show its beauties again and basilica di San Bernardino is one of those. By night is really beautiful because the lights highlight its shape and beauty.

The inside of this church is gorgeous. The skill and workmanship to create this building and the paintings and architecture is very talented. Some say it is better than certain Roman churches *cough*.
The time of day I visited it was eerily quiet. But it also meant I could spend more quality time looking at things in great detail and admiring the beauty of the place. You could spend a lot of time here if you wished just absorbing and taking it all in.
Definitely worth a visit if you are in L'aquila and should be high on your list of things to do (and appreciate).
