Seriously - when in Bavaria, take the train (or rent a car so you can drive on the Autobahn) and get thee to the Audi Forum for a factory tour. The museum is great (on par with BMW Welt in Munich) and the various cafes serve wonderful food, but I can honestly say that after three trips to Germany, the Audi factory tour is, by far and away, the high point of my experiences there.

Those familiar with manufacturing of any kind will find lots to love here from the immaculate workspaces to the innovative union of man & machine to the well thought out ergonomic solutions to the polished (and unusually attractive) technicians. The energy reclamation and sustainability efforts are impressive as well - every last scrap of material is recycled, every extra watt saved and put back into the grid.

Newbies will likely be awestruck by whirling robotic arms, massive assembly lines, and the sheer complexity of what it takes to make a car - even if you have zero interest in cars or Audi as a brand, the factory tour will give you a new appreciation for the people who made your automobile. It is a thorough and optimistic vision into the future of automation, high tech manufacturing, and sustainability.

Our tour guide was superbly knowledgeable about every aspect of the car-making process, the design & engineering behind each model, how robotics increase quality & reliability, and how Audi has managed to retain its workforce by retraining and retooling them rather than replacing them as automation became more cost effective. Americans have a thing or two to learn from Germans here.

The tour lasts 2 hours and covers ~3mi of factory space as you follow a single car through full production, so dress comfortably. Absolutely no photography is allowed and pay attention to where you stand; several members of our group kept getting in the way of robots delivering parts. Register in advance; fee was 7 Euro per person but could have been 50 and still would have been worth it.

Very, very highly recommended.

We booked a hotel in Ingolstadt for one night and found out that this is where Audi has it's headquarters. Being Audi owners ourselves we booked a two hour factory tour (the assembly portion) and it was awesome.
Tours can be booked online but there is a caveat. Despite the usual German efficiency, the process turned out not to be too efficient. We received an email to confirm receipt of our booking request but when we arrived 4 days later we still had not received confirmation that we were scheduled for the tour and there was only 1 place left, After a lot of back and forth they were able to accommodate us both in the end. They state that you will receive confirmation of your booking "shortly" so the lesson is, call or email to make sure your were actually booked if you do not receive an email "shortly" after making the booking request!
This is a walking tour and it takes about 1-1/2 hours (the first half hour is used for orientation and transportation) so bring running shoes or other shoes that you can walk on comfortably that long. You will see lots of robots that we were told assemble about 90% of the car but relatively few people. Many just feed the robots with parts. It is mainly the electrical cabling, and interior assembly where the people come in. The tour is 3.50 euros for seniors and I believe 7 for adults. No cameras or cell phones allowed but they can be stores in lockers before the start of the tour.
Together with the Audi museum if certainly was an afternoon well spent. If you're into cars, highly recommended!

We purchased an Audi from the US for European Delivery. It was a great experience! They put us up at the Hilton at Munich airport and then picked us up and drove us to Ingolstadt. We got a special wristband to eat and drink at their excellent restaurant all day as well as visit the museum and take a detailed tour of the factory there. We had a 10am appointment and the delivery process took about 90 minutes. I would recommend an early appointment to leisurely enjoy everything there.

Our last full day visiting family in Furth. We wanted to ride ICE so decided to go to Ingolstadt to the Audi Forum. We had a fabulous day visit. Ate a delicious lunch, the Wiener schnitzel was yummy good, and be sure and get the cappuccino, that alone is worth the trip!! We also took the factory tour. The robots were awesome. So amazing since most days we get in our car and drive never thinking about what it takes to built them.

We were here to pick up a new Audi. Delivery was very organized and flawless. The factory tour was impressive -- fun to see all the robots. As part of the deal, we had coupons for free lunch -- my hubby loved the cappucino with froth in the shape of the Audi logo!!! It was a fun day -- and I am not the least bit interested in cars!!!

The Audi Forum - Factory, Museum, Market Restaurant, Gift Shop etc. is located about 83 km or about an hours train travel time from Munich central. But again if you haven't booked in advance there maybe vacancies due to late cancellations on the day you are at Audi and the Audi Visitor Information Desk staff will be able to advise accordingly.

Factory tours need to be booked many weeks in advance because tour places are limited, just like for the BMW factory tours.

Now if your've visited the BMW Factory and/or Museum why would you visit the Audi facilities? Well because each has different stories and histories.

Take for example the Auto Union (later Audi) "Silver Arrow" racer, one of about 25 - 30 built in the 1930's, which broke land speed records just before WWII with speeds in excess of 300 kph. These racers were later requisitioned as war booty by the USSR at the end of WWII and only a few survived to be purchased by Western collectors before and after the fall of the USSR. But that i will leave to the Riga National Auto Museum review.

Or take for example the green bodied Wanderer Puppchen. One of these cars was exported to Australia in two boxes (one box for the body shell and another box for the chassis, transmission and axles) in 1923. The chassis box sat unopened in a warehouse in Sydney Australia for approximately 70+ years before being returned to the Audi Museum in the mid 1990's still in its original export packaging box. This story alone is fascinating and one the Audi Museum guides will happily expand on what is almost like something out of the "back to the future" pandora's box.

Then last but not least there's the onsite Audi Market Restaurant with a menu range and food display to rival 5 star restaurants at 2-3 star prices and just the thing to cap off a couple of hours at the Audi Forum.

Each auto forum has its own unique stories, histories and characteristics that leave one in awe of what was achieved and transpired in the 20th century in transportation development terms.

We visited the Audi Forum for a tour in June 19 and it was fantastic! Booking is a must. We called and booked a few months in advance ( it can get very booked up ). Don’t be concerned that they do not email confirmation details, the reference number / surname is all they need.

Getting to the Forum from Munich is easy. Get the DB rail to Ingolstat HBF and then the bus ( route 11 ) to Audi Forum ( approx 20 mins bus journey ).

The tour was fascinating, our guide was very knowledgable and happy to answer any questions. Some amazing facts where given.

Phones & Cameras cannot be taken, they must be left in the locker ( you will need a €1 coin which you get back when you collect your items ). Wear comfy shoes as there if plenty of walking ( approx 3km ) but well worth it.

After the tour the restaurant was great for lunch and the shop has a great range of Audi merchandise ( but it’s pricey ).

Well worth the journey for to visit the forum.

Between the museum and factory tour, there is enough to spend a lot of time there. Factory tour was very interesting, and the museum is worth a visit. Restaurant is also very good at lunch ! Would recommend a visit to anyone in the area !

What a fantastic way to spend the day. We arrived just as the museum opened. Had the place to ourselves nearly fora whole hour. Lots to see here. Much larger than the facility in Neckarsulm, which we did the very next day. Both spots have much to see. After the museum we had lunch in the cafeteria type place. Lots of yummy hot foods prepared in stations to pick from. It was very easy, fast, and yummy! No menu, so no english. Just have to point to what you want. Then we did the production compact tour which was great. A very in depth tour of the production and lots to see. We did this whole day as a day trip from Munich via train. 20 euro taxi both ways from the train station to/from Audi. Town had a lot of traffic so we were glad we picked the taxi vs the bus. Great day trip!!!
