A very informative wine museum

I've visited a lot of wine museums, and this is one of the best. It has a particularly good section on pests and diseases, a topic which is often glossed over. The displays give a good introduction to the life of a vigneron, the technicalities of viticulture and vinification, and the history of wine production (Muscadet, essentially) in the Nantais region. There's also a room devoted to the story of Abelard and Heloise - Abelard was a local boy. At the end you'll be given a tasting of wine or grape juice from a local producer and there's a small shop with bottles from a handful of other producers as well as wine-related gifts.

The local wineries have done a very good job of presenting both historical wine-making artifacts and the process of planting, tending, and harvesting. It helps if you've visited wineries in other locations, then you have here an excellent review with introduction of peculiarities to this region rather than information over-load. I liked the inclusion of actual vines in the displays to show the pruning stages. The videos are excellent but en français. Not a problem for us, but it may be for those with minimal facility with the language. The receptionist was delightful and very chatty when she discovered we were from Canada. You complete the visit with a tasting: in our case, a much better muscadet than we had for our lunch in Clisson.
