Everyone's heard of Columbus and his three ships but it's something else to see full size replicas of each one of them. To be able to wander around on the ships is really special as you can get a real sense of how small they actually were. Imagine being stuck onboard for months at a time!
Some of the figures and displays near the ships are a bit camp. but there is an interesting room with documents and small replicas of the boats where you can read up on their famous journey. Who knew a fellow sailor arrived back in Spain weeks before Columbus and tried to take all the glory!
The museum is very much focused on Columbus and his ships. If you're looking for a balanced view on the impact Columbus' journey had on local indigineous peoples of the Caribbean and the wider historical impact you won't find that here. We were prepared to overlook that as what we were keen on was boarding the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria ships, and that did not disappoint!

This is a visit you must do. Not only the caravels but also the video is very interesting. Regarding caravels, you wonder how they could go so far with this little vessels! It had to be really hard to travel that way. Regarding video, it is great when they tell all the history and all the stories regarding the discovery.

Excellent attraction, well laid out and very informative. Great for children and adults. Car park across the road free, beware of woman trying to charge if you're driving anything other than a Spanish car!

If I had just seen the replica ships themselves, I would have rated this attraction as average. Kids might enjoy the place. But For adults, the ships are very touristy. Although it was interesting that the ships had actually re-created Columbus' voyage. However, what made this place stand out for my husband and me was the information in the interpretive centre. If you're not rushed by children or schedules, take time to read about the 4 voyages that were undertaken. It was a totally fascinating story & well worth taking the time to go through it all. It totally changed my perception of history & the 'discovery of America'.

This attraction contains life-size reproductions of the Santa Maria, La Pinta and La Niña, the three ships that Columbus used to make his momentous journey to discover the Americas in 1492. The reproductions were built around 1990-1992 to celebrate 500 years since this discovery was made. There was a two-fold purpose behind this; one was to sail exactly the same route in them as had Columbus over the three month journey to America, and the other was to improve the research into their construction, navigation and life on board the caravels for the seamen making the original voyage.
1994 was when this exhibition and harbour were first inaugurated and besides the main attraction of the replicated boats there is a visitor centre, a medieval quarter which attempts to show a dock as it might have been at that time with structures such as a market, a potters barn, horse and cart, along with other trades of that time. The dockside displays items that give us an idea of the load that would occupy the holds of the ships. There is even a functioning dockside (medieval?) cafe. Another part of the museum attempts to show the indigenous culture of the first island upon which Columbus disembarked, which he named San Salvador.
‘Caravels’, as these ships are termed, are surprisingly small to undertake a voyage of this magnitude. Indeed, one of them did not make the return journey, its timbers being used to construct a fort at one of their landfalls. The ‘muelle’ part of the name of this review has several meanings including dock, pier, wharf, harbour, or even ‘a finger of land that projects out into a body of water’.
The real bonus to this attraction is that visitors are able to climb onto the ships and explore them all, top to bottom, in detail; including entering the replica of Columbus's cabin.
Inside the visitor centre there is incorporated a video auditorium with a film giving some background to the voyage. The sound track is in Spanish and somewhat loud, but from time to time, it shows a version with English subtitles.
The cost of admission is a very reasonable €1.50 for students and pensioners, €3.60 for adults and family tickets for €7.50 Money well spent in my opinion.
Wheelchair users can explore the visitor centre and the dockside displays. It is even possible to get right up to the Santa Maria and one of the caravels by the visitors gangway but not actually get on board the ships.
Thanks for reading this and if you've found it helpful I'd appreciate a ‘thumbs up’ below.

The Muelle de las Carabelas is located on Huelva. It is a museum with replicas of the ships that first sail by Christopher Columbus in 1491. The La Santa Maria (50m), La pinto and La Niña at (30m). Go on board to experience it. Great visit.

Stopped here on a Trafalgar tour. We didn't go through whole museum but it was a great stop along our route. Replicas of the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria are great for adults and kids. There is also a little shop for coffee and drinks on the water. Great place to stop and take in some history!

Myself and three generations of my family have visited Las Carabelas several times before. We visited again yesterday just after the reopening after several months of renovation work. It is better than before and would highly recommend anyone to make a visit. The entrance fees are very low (7.50 for a family of two adults and two children). There is also an excellent tapas bar by the lagoon. IT IS CLOSED ON MONDAYS.

Superb review of the historic voyages of Columbus. Inside the building there is a museum showing many artefacts of the time and showing how the replicas of the 3 ships were built to the exact measurement and in the same manner of that time. An interesting slide show can be seen in the theatre, beautifully illustrated. Outside there is a representation of the type of habitat found when the ships arrived. The ships are in a lagoon and it is possible to walk round them on a walkway. Unfortunately, when we were there we could only go on one ship, as the others were being refurbished. It is truly remarkable that these brave sailors sailed into the unknown in such small vessels. We were fortunate to arrive fairly early and spend time there before bus parties arrived. There is a large car park very close by the attraction, which did not seem to be signposted.

It was somewhat entertaining, but I was distracted by the kitschy-ish presentation. The exhibits around the lagoon are silly. The boats themselves were interesting especially given how small they are/were. The museum didn't draw me in. The location is outside the city of Huelva...a few miles drive....in a 'park'. Not much signage or advertisement telling you where it is to entice you come in.

In order to get in to the ships, a couple of steps have to be mastered. Then you are on the main deck.
With a wheelchair it is definitely impossible to reach the lower deck or the upper deck.
Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend it for a wheelchair.
