I was here today for Chad Beckim's sparsely-set Lights Rise on Grace. The theater again, was the perfect venue for a tightly- scripted drama that required focus on three colorful characters and the multi-roles they portrayed. While I enjoyed the a la Tarantino take on crass verbiage, their individual stories tender moments were lost in the rapid script and the constant banging as prison doors shut. As much as I would like to cry with Grace and Large as their tears flowed, their sob stories where not compelling enough to reel me in. Riece's butt cheeks provided more lights on grace than the rather clumsy ménage a trois scenes.

I enjoyed visiting this theater. Everyone was so nice! There was not a bad seat in the house. Nice refreshment offerings and comfortable seating. Get a stampede ticket (when available) two hours before the show for $20. Great value!!!

We saw "Nothing to Lose But Our Chains" (presented by Second City), written by Felonious Monk, who also starred in this thought-provoking production. This is a "hip" theatre which produces new and innovative work in a compact space. The theatre has floor and tiered seating and can accommodate many audience needs, including the vision and hearing impaired. It has it's own limited refreshments featuring independent small, local beverages and snacks. While the size may be small, the talent is anything but. It is conveniently located at 641 D Street NW, near two metro stops, Archives-Navy Memorial and Penn Quarter, or Gallery Place- China town. There are lots of convenient restaurants right near the theatre on 7th Street, NW, E and F Streets, some of which may give you a break on parking or offer meal times that work well with performances. There's also a parking garage steps from the theatre. Contact the Box Office at 202-393-3939. Make sure the show is appropriate for the ages you have. This theatre is progressive and open. We loved it! Because some performances are edgy, if you are bringing children you might want to check the show description to make sure it's appropriate for their ages.

This theater does not honor seat selections made and purchased online. I purchased seats A103 and A104 online for a November 27, 2021 performance. When we arrived at the theater, we were assigned seats G101 and G102. It was arbitrary, capricious and reflects poor planning and organization. I was very disappointed.

We went to the "Black Side of the Moon" this past weekend. Great, intimate theater with not a bad seat in the house. The very talented cast was from Chicago. I'm sure they aren't there for long, but I would definitely go back to Woolly Mammoth to see a different show. Building is unique, theater is comfortable and there are lots of great restaurants near by for before or after the show. We came with our 20 year old son, who got a great deal. Would definitely check out the type of show before bringing younger children - This show was "R" rated due to language. Of course, my son loved it!

After years of attending a show or two a year, I've finally taken the plunge and ordered season tickets as this reliable theatre. Woolly offers immersive experiences for theatre-goers, inviting patrons to "get into character" with creative lobby designs and interactions. The plays at this venue are often humorous, and in my experience, always quality.

We just made our first visit to Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company to see their production of "Zombie: The American" by director/playwright Robert O'Hara ("Antebellum" & the Obie Award winning "Bootycandy", both of which have been produced at Woolly.) Huge "Walking Dead" fan that I am, I'll admit they had me at 'zombies' & Mr. O'Hara's sci-fi thriller/black comedy set in a dystopian US where the undead lurk under the White House did not disappoint.

Housed in unassuming, yet stylish quarters on D Street NW in DC's Penn Quarter, Woolly's 265 seat courtyard style theatre affords the audience with a sense of intimacy and a great view of the action. We tend to go for front row seats as often as possible & while we ended up six rows back in house center, it was just as good (if not better) than being down front. A seating chart for each production is available on the company's website, since some productions, such as "Zombie...." involve modifications to the typical house set up.

House staff are friendly, welcoming, & wiling to go the extra mile to make sure you have a great all-round experience. For example, I wanted to purchase a particular script that's been on sale at Woolly for a bit. (In the interest of discretion, I'll say it's called "Stupid 'rhymes with ducking' Bird"). The house manager, whose name escapes me at the moment, was kind enough to take a few extra minutes out of his pre-show preparations to go dig up a copy for me & chat with us a bit about their productions of it.

Whatever production you see, be sure to spend some time exploring the lobby display. It's a great way to spark discussions and provoke thoughts about the show you'll be seeing. The "Zombie...." display invites audience members to contribute their ideas to the chain of events that leads to the bleak state of the US depicted onstage during the show. And while we didn't have the opportunity to participate in one of them, Woolly offers a series 'House Lights Up Events' for each production, featuring a variety of events that allow you to further discuss & share with your fellow audience members.

If you like your theatre as "comfort food" after a hard day or prefer the tried and true classics--not that there's anything wrong with either of those options--you'll probably want to explore some of DC's other companies. But if you're willing to take a chance on daring, new productions by some of today's top playwrights (Lisa D'Amour, Danai Gurira, Samuel D. Hunter, Bruce Norris, and Sara Ruhl for starters), performed by a top flight company of actors, then Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company is the place for you.

We definitely fall into the latter category and while this was our first visit to Woolly, it definitely won't be our last.

Woolly Mammoth is a medium budget company which specializes in producing "innovative scripts with something challenging to say" They have a top notch acting company and very high production values.

I attended their current production "Zombie The American" . While very well done and featuring a great first act, the the second act and the resolution left something to be desired. The setting, the United States in 2063, was rather bizarre - the first openly gay "lord president" and a threatening civil war being held at bay by African peace keepers, not to mention zombies in the basement of a South Dakota "White House".

One of the interesting features of Woolly is how they incorporate their lobby displays into the production. For this play the display provided details as to how the United States sank into the desperate shape it was in at the start of the play. While not believable, it did add to the production. I have attended many productions there, and all in all the better plays more than compensate for the lesser.

If you consider yourself adventuresome when it comes to theater, look no further than Woolly when in DC. Woolly is a leading supporter locally and nationally of new work. Its performance space is perfect for new work -- intimate, fresh, and scrappy.

My wife and I saw "We Are Proud to Present" at this theater, which is about the German occupation of Namibia (Sudwestafrika), and our review is mixed, in that I would give the performance an excellent and she would rate it average. Thus, the rating we show splits the difference. The presentation seemed to have some improvisation in it, though there was definitely a plot moving from a defined starting point to the finish, and the actors were quite skilled and convincing. I see in the sidebar as I write this that another reviewer has described the performances at this theater as edgy, and I do think that's one point my wife and I would agree upon. In any case, it's worth taking in a performance and seeing what you think. (But don't arrive late. If you do, you may find yourself incorporated into the performance, as happened to some folks the night we were there.)
