An absolute must for Hanoi
feb 2018. • Parovi
I am SO happy I went with Basil Cooing Club with Mai instead of all the other cooking school options. The whole experience with Mai is beyond all my expectation. From waiting on the street for us upon arrival, walking to the market, cooking in the garden to sipping tea and chatting post meal, Mai and Huan are hands down the best hosts among all the SE Asia tour/activities I've ever partake in. They were incredibly warm, genuine, knowledgeable, and one really walks away not just with a full tummy but also deep appreciation for the people and culture of Hanoi. If I ever go back to Hanoi, I'd want to stop by just to say hi to these lovely people. Thank you Mai and Huan for the wonderful time and I will make your Pho Bo recipe proud!

Amazing!

We had a blast taking this cooking class. It was an extraordinary experience in a friendly setting at Mai and Huan's home. The recipes were simple home cooking style, yet tasted amazing. Mai is also a keen coffee drinker, she served her own mix of coffee and gave us recommendation on coffee shop, which was a bonus point for us. Thanks Mai and Huan!

Lovely home style cooking class
dec 2016. • Samostalno
I was the only one in the cooking class. It is run by a lovely Vietnamnese couple. It started with local market trip then the cooking lesson, followed by a lovely home cooked meal with the couple. Highly recommend this cooking class for an authentic experience.

Wonderful Experience
okt 2016.
I had a wonderful time with Mai and Huan. It was great to experience authentic Vietnamese cooking in a traditional home. I was made to feel welcome immediately and really enjoyed my day in their home. While the food was great, it was their hospitality that set this cooking class apart from the countless others I could have selected. I highly recommend Basil Cooking Club to anybody that is thinking of trying their hand at Vietnamese cooking. Thanks again to Mai and Huan for a most enjoyable time.

Phenomenal class, memorable experience
apr 2016. • Samostalno
After reading many reviews on different cooking classes in Hanoi, it was not hard to see why Mai and Huan have such positive feedback. After being invited into their home, you really feel welcomed and part of something that they are personally excited to share with you. From 8am to 2pm, as a solo traveler, I was able to go down to the local market with Mai and get a first hand experience on how locals are able to fulfill their cooking with the most divine and wonderful range of various foods. Returning to their home, I was able to try my hand at a variety of dishes that were pre-selected by myself a few days before (you're provided with a completely range of options). Mai is extremely thorough in her explanations and is willing to take any questions, even if they may be so menial. You get stuck in and are able to cook the dishes yourself. You understand why Vietnam has such fantastic food and that there is more than just ingredients, there is a love for what is created, from the preparation to the cooking to finally enjoying the various dishes over lunch, sharing stories, experiences, and doing this all while in the home of Mai & Huan. A memorable experience to treasure, highly recommended.

A wonderful family and food adventure
feb 2016.
Mai and her family invited to their home on the Tet new year for turned out to be not only a cooking class but the opportunity to meet family and learn about their new year traditions. It was truly a cultural experience. The dishes we learned to prepare were easy once you got the hang of chopping. Ingredients were fresh and it was obvious in the results. Hanoi spring rolls and the duck were fabulous as was the rest of the meal. Mai and her extended family are warm and gracious, hope you get to meet them when you attend your class A must do in Hanoi, even if you don't do a lot of cooking, just ask my husband Alan

Wonderful experience, more than just a cooking class!
jun 2015. • Porodično
We had an awesome half-day (8am to 2pm) at Mai and Huan's. They are some of the loveliest people I've ever met and they really make the effort to know us and to share with us about vietnam.

We went to the local market and there was so much to see. Mai also pointed out seasonal fruits / vegetables and shared so much about the local ingredients with us.

Back at her home, Mai patiently explained and demonstrated the different steps, and then made sure that we all got our hands dirty and do the cooking too. There was sufficient ingredients and equipment for everyone to work on. You really cooked your own food, unlike some other cooking classes. It was a private class and we could ask as much as we needed. It was also plenty of fun just chatting away while we prepared the food.

And finally at the end, you will get to eat the food you prepared - in our case, hanoi spring rolls and grilled pork - as well as some additional dishes cooked by Mai! She specially cooked some spicy soup for us after I mentioned that we like spicy food!

And they also have a beautiful home decorated with Huan's countless sketchings of vietnamnese architecture as well as his bonsai plants. It is indeed vietnamnese hospitality at its best.

Warning: you may not be able to eat anything else for the rest of the day.

Great class, great fun
okt 2015. • Parovi
During a relaxed and fun class at their lovely courtyard home, Mai and Huan taught us how to make tasty and simple Vietnamese dishes. They spoke passionately and knowledgeably about the food and made sure that we were able to follow each of the steps comfortably.

Another thing that stood out about this class was the number of options available in the menu, which allowed us to choose dishes that suited our tastes.

A few days after our visit, Mai emailed the recipes so that we will be able to make the dishes at home.

We had a lot of fun, enjoyed delicious food and learned a lot about Vietnamese cuisine; Basil Cooking Club was one of the highlights of our trip to Hanoi, and I highly recommend it.

The cooking experience we were looking for
jul 2015. • Prijatelji
Mai and Huan, the wonderful hosts at Basil Cooking Club, cater their business to visitors looking for more than a 'cooking class,' but rather a genuine and personal exchange of cultural information and experience, conversation, food preparation, and communal dining.

We'd read about several different cooking classes in Hanoi, and in the end chose Mai and Huan's because it is small, somewhat out of the tourist center, and based in their own home.

As others have explained, we were sent instructions to Mai and Huan's home and were warmly received by them with tea and cool towels. Fortunately for us, we were the only guests to have booked that day, so it was just the four of us. While it can be nice to meet other tourists, we really didn't want to have to go through the "Where are you from? Oh! Where else have you visited?" routine.

After a short time, we walked a short distance to the local market which was wonderfully colorful and much more manageable (in terms of space and crowds) than other markets we'd been to in Hanoi. Mai stopped from time to time to chat with the vendors or to explain aspects of the produce to us and we were able to then take even better photos than had we been on our own.

Back at home, we prepared our meal (arranged beforehand and chosen by us from a nice selection of starters, mains and fruits for dessert) with Mai, whose life experience and gentle nature made the entire experience such a pleasure. As we prepared the meal, even before having eaten it, we thought "We can do this at home…!" The whole point of a cooking class, in the end.

Once everything was prepared, we sat with Mai and Huan and enjoyed the delicious food, including a few dishes Mai had prepared ahead of time. We enjoyed more conversation together and it really did feel like a lunch with new friends as opposed to 'just a cooking class meal.'

My sense is that Mai and Huan really love what they do. They are genuine and kind and treated us with great respect. Several days after our time together, Mai sent an email with full recipes of the dishes we had created and her best wishes for our continued travels.

We would very highly recommend Basil Cooking Club to anyone looking for a personalized cooking experience with lovely people in a real Vietnamese home. Wonderful.
