A lively square at the heart of Ho Chi Minh City!

Right in front of two of Ho Chi MInh City's 19th century landmarks - the "Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral" and the "Central Post Office", you will find "Paris Square", most commonly known as "Notre-Dame Square". It is a very lively attraction, with locals and tourists gathering around gardens, monuments, street-food vendors and many souvenir sellers. At its center, the granite statue of Virgin Mary, depicted as "Our Lady of Peace", brought from Italy in 1959. Take your time, stroll along "Notre-Dame Square" and try to visit some of the nearby monuments - important remnants of the French colonial years in Vietnam! Enjoy!

A pleasant way to spend time in the evenings sitting on the side walks.

During the evenings the square and side walks around come alive with locals gathering and spending time together. Vendors provide plastic or paper sheets on which one can sit and enjoy your own food and drinks or buy from the few local vendors. Mostly finger snacks and soft drinks, fruit juices. Excellent ambience.
Mother Mary's statue is in the square in front of the church. A pleasant way to spend late evenings.

Minature Notre Dam

Visiting the church, was a disappointment, as it vaguely look like a miniature version of the original Notre Dam, before the fire happened. It was situated close to other tourist attractions.

Relaxing... People watching... Historical buildings

Lots of activity and hustle and bustle in this busy square in central HCMC. The Notre Dame Church is a mini sister to the big brother in Paris. The historic Post Office is also quite a colonial style French building. Nice layout of the square.

A beautiful place

Its located in the centre. One of the towers was under restoration. When you are in the city its one of the 'must' sights that you should visit.

A shame about the scaffolding and hoardings around the cathedral but the area is interesting and the Post Office fascinating. Good place to start an independent tour of the city. No need for a guide for this one.

Fantastic Example of Colonial French Architecture

Unfortunately, the inside of the cathedral was closed due to restoration but the outside was very interesting. The Square is very pretty and has a very interesting statue of the Virgin mary.

When I visited in late September, it was under renovation so we could only see the cathedral from the outside. I would be surprised if it was finished yet. Sorry.

Ladies, no skimpy clothes! Dress in your Sunday best with covered arms and legs. It is a Catholic Church like all other such churches all around the world. Be aware of Mass timings as you are not allowed in at any other times.

As with all religious places in Asia such as Temples and Churches you should wear modest clothing. Shoulders well covered. No shorts or flip flops. Dresses nothing above the knee, so no mini skirts.
A few years ago when a cafe in my home town of Sydney was held by a crazy gunman, I felt so terribly upset. I am in no way religious but I felt I had to go to each denominations place of worship and ask their Gods to stop the craziness.
I went to Notre Dame (lit a candle), a Hindu Temple (lit incense), a Buddhist Temple (lit incense) and a Muslim Mosque (Prayed with one of the men at the mosque and I am female). At each place I had a short sleeved non clinging shirt, jeans and converse and was welcomed at each place.
I hope this helps you and other travellers.
