The buildings once used are ruined by natural calamities or bombing by the Japanese who surprisingly ruled these places for nearly three years. Once the Japanese left they handed over it to Netaji hence the new name. Its about 10 minutes by boat from water sports complex, aberdeen jetty, Port Blair. The light and sound show must be pre booked. Do not forget to see the light house at the far end of the islandVisited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 26, 2023
- vidhyaAhmedabad, India8 contributionsThe aesthetic Ross Island and Adventurous North Bay IslandRoss Island and Coral Islands ( North Bay ) are the two worthy places to Visit in Andaman. Sadai Tours and Travels organised a trip to this place. Ross Island will give you glimpses of the historical events and is extremely peaceful. The beach is quiet and the island is full of Nature. You can see deer everywhere, these cute animals will welcome you in their way and make your experience warm and hearty. You will enjoy the lighthouse and the broken English Architecture is worth giving your attention. If you are interested in going to an enigmatic place full of Nature and tranquility North Bay is an adventurous place where you can do Scuba and experience other sports and adventure activities. Although most of the buildings have collapsed but you can admire the way the island has been designed and how luxurious the life there was. A guide lady knws each one like her pets by their names, and they follow her like pied pipers...they are though very gentle. A short tour to see the ruins can be done in the day time. Quaint place overall. Plastic, esp polythene prohibited. Ne sound and light show started at this island.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 19, 2024

Located a short boat ride away from Port Blair it takes a total of 1to 2 hours to visit. There are lots of deers, peacocks and rabbits running around not scared of humans. You can easily take photographs with them. Good for those with interest in colonial history as well. If you don't want to walk you can take a ride on electric carts for Rs 80 only. There are good views from most places on the island as well as a nice lighthouse right at the end of the tour

1.The great attraction is to meet Smt. Anuradha Rao & her so deep friendship with deers, squirrels, peacocks & Bulbul Birds !!
Spending time with her is a life time experience. We spent an hour, when she called deers & in 2/3 mins, about 15 / 20 gathered around us & we could touch them / feed them with love. Great !!
Similarly, on one whistle & calling, at least 7/8 peacocks came & a few of them danced ! Unbelievable !!
Same was with squirrels & bulbul !!
The love between all of them & Anuradhaji is pure, intense, & so spectacular !A very very rare experience in life !!
DO NOT MISS IT !!
2. Else the battery vehicle ride of half hour is good & worth doing once !!
3. You should go with minimum 3 / 4 hrs in hand to enjoy more & be more with Anuradha Rao !

This amazing island, just 10 minutes by speedboat from Aberdeen Jetty at Port Blair, takes you back in time the moment you step on & are welcomed by the Japanese Bunker. You can either explore on your own or hire the E-Buggy to take you to the highest point. The beach is badly damaged during the Tsunami along with almost half of this island which bore the brunt of Tsunami & saved the Port Blair city. The 'Once upon a time' royal place for the elite British rulers is now in ruins. It gives impression of some of the Cambodian sites. Added attraction is Ms. Anuradha Rao who can speak to the Deer & Birds on this island. Usually, only 60-90 minutes time is allotted to tourists under the package trip by speedboat, but at least 2-3 hours should do justice to this awesome island. Check for this extra time while booking tickets & pay little extra is required. It's open to tourists only during daytime. Enjoy the Laser Show in evenings, pl remember to buy tickets from the Tourism Office near Post Office in Port Blair. No tickets are sold on the island.

Ross Island was the first 'Kala Pani' jail to be built ( before Cellular jail in port blair) and displays the ruins of the British establishment.
A 20 min boat ride from the Aberdeen Jetty gets you to Ross Island. As you approach, the water is a bright blue color !
Easier way to explore the island is through shared rickshaws for Rs.60
It takes you around the island, while the driver explains the history of the the various buildings, bungalows, jails, quarters etc.
The top of the island leads to a stairway towards the lighthouse on the island. ( best pics can be taken here)
Deer roam around the island and one can get up close and personal ( although the Deer are not friendly when one gets too close)
There is a restaurant that is sometimes operational.
The entire excursion is for ~ 2-2.5 hours, and is a must visit in Port Blair!

A must visit. A short duration visit- around 100-150 deers who are very comfortable in taking pictures with you, a few peacocks and rabbits. Historic colony of the british with their houses which are mostly not standing anymore. Beyond that a great view and a mini trek. There are options to pay 80rs per person and take a gold car ride to show the island, I would say walk on your own instead because you can take in the views at your own pace and also there is anyway a couple of flight of stairs for the viewpoint which the golf cart doesnt take you anyway so its a waste of money.

Ross island is a beautiful place to visit, specially the light house point. Currently halt at this island is limited to 90 minutes. Once you get down of ferry, you have to buy an entrance ticket and once in, you have the option of exploring it on foot or by battery cart. We preferred battery cart because of time limitation and hot Sun. You can see ruins of buildings of British era and can imagine the life at that time.

We had identified Ross island as a must do in Port Blair after reading the reviews and blogs. We had travelled to Andaman in a group of 11 including 3 kids.
We contacted Gopal (+91 99332 02151) of Sadai Tours and Travel immediately after booking our flight tickets. He helped us get a chartered boat (Rs 370 per head) to the Ross Island and back to Port Blair.
Gopal had sent a vehicle to pick us all up from our hotel at 8:30 am. The vehicle dopped us at the Sports Complex Gate. Another person from Gopal's team took us inside and got us introduced to the Boat manager.
We were taken on the boat immediately after wearing our life jackets. It is a short trip by boat to the Ross. The boat waited for us till we finished visiting all the sites at Ross.
We had to buy entry tickets to the Ross Island (Rs 50 per head). There were golf carts waiting for taking the tourists around the small island. The tickets were Rs 80 per head. It was a very good discission to go by the gold cart as the heat was killing us all.
There is a lighthouse in the island to which you need to walk + take a few steps (10-15 min) . The views are amazing. The deers in the island are quite friendly and move around freely,
It is a good half day trip from Port Blair. Contact Gopal (+91 99332 02151) for making all the arrangements (airport / jetty pick up+ drop, local sight seeing in Port Blair, Havelock, Neil, tickets for light and sound show, ferry tickets + + +. He is THE MAN for a seamless fun easy and luxury tour in Andaman. All the drivers that came through him were really well behaved and had good knowledge about each place.

Totally worth it. But can't spend more than 2 hours here. Definitely take the buggy car ride if you cannot walk in the scorching sun. Photo and videographers can take some stunning shots from here.

Ross Island is beautiful and is a place where you can explore some beautiful colonial ruins and close quarter experience of the spotted dears.
But the biggest disappointment is the Buggy service inside the island run by some private buggy company. They charge Rs. 480 for a buggy for 2 pax and promise a 40 minute tour of the Island while they do a quick less than 10 minute trip without bothering to explain or show the island around. Also, they are not remorseful of cheating the tourists of poor service or for not keeping up with the promises.
I wish that Andaman State tourism department takes action against these private companies at Ross Island fooling the tourists.
Avoid the buggy at all costs if you don't want the trip to ruin your beautiful memories of Ross Island or Andaman.
Also, the entire round trip to Ross Island from Port Blair is about 1 hrs 15 minutes inclusive of the 1 hour Island trip and 15-20 minutes trip to and fro via ferry.

We had visited ross island on 02/01/2023. There will be an speed boat that we have to take to reach ross island from Port Blair which costs around rs/-370 per person. Once u visit Ross Island, you will be given 1 hour to spend time there. I will tell according my experience 1 hour is very less time. Electric vehicle is also available. There are many old British administration ruins, free roaming deers as well as view point. View point requires 45min trekking or one can take electric vehicle as well which is available outside jetty. Sadai Gopal bhaiya had suggested us to 1st visit light house as soon as possible since photo or view comes very well. Have attached some of photos as well. If we waste time in photography of British ruins, u can miss light house so please go to light house 1st and then on way back u can visit ruins. Since sadai gopal bhaiya had booked our speed boat tickets, we got discount and costed only 300 rs per person.
He is best and very genuine whom u can trust blindly on any booking. For any hotel/ferry/cab/auto/byk booking in andaman islands. Contact him in number 9531918600/9933202151. He will be little busy. Contact him in advance for any details. We had 10 days trip. He took care of everything. He charges very minimal also. In ANI for any thing he is go to person.
He also has very good knowledge on port blair geography.
We were very disappointed that lights and sound show were cancelled in cellular Jail. Gopal bhaiya suggested an alternative for the time. So even if any event Is cancelled, if u contact gopal bhaiya he will give u many alternate options as well.

Madam good morning, since u are taking yr 70 yrs old mother with u yr first priority is to look after her convenience only. As suggested by others for visiting portblair u have to go to (Niel)Saheed Deep and (Havelock) Swaraj Deep to enjoy beaches, water sports activity. Both the islands having water sports activity but more better and equipped in Swaraj Deep. But Saheed Deep water sports are also good and done at BharatPur beach. Stay in Saheed deep is very cool and better than Swaraj Deep. Now come to motion sickness. There are two ways to travel to these islands. One is Helicopter(seats are very very limited for tourists) and by water. There are Govt. Boats and private boats to these islands. Heavier the boats the feeling of motion will be less. In my opinion it is Govt. Boats. Have a safe journey for u your mother son and family. Once u go to Andaman u have to return there again if u are keen lover of nature.
Hi, I am planning to see the light n sound show at Ross. I would be thankful to you if you can give some input on the following:
1. Ho to pre-book the ticket for the same? One of the tour operator I talked with is clueless about this! Is it available on spot?
2. Once the light and sound ticket is obtained, how to get the ferry ticket for afternoon-evening transfers.
Thanks,
Thank you for your answer. I actually called the tourism department in Port Blare.
The ticket can ONLY be obtained (as of Jan. 2020) from the tourism office only on the same day between 9am-3pm. The ticket is Rs 100. The ferry (dedicated to the L&S show) can also be booked from there paying extra Rs 300.
However, other than the difficulty of getting this ticket, the other thing that is making me thinking about changing plan is, if we take this ferry dedicated for L&S show, we may not get good time to roam in the island itself as it would approach evening. As per the tourism dept person, we will get around 45 minutes between the ferry reaches there and the L&S how starts. Not sure if it is sufficient.

You cannot reach from port Blair jetty to this particular point in 15 min.
There are boats which carry 10 persons at a time
If you are not interested in Scuba activities or folding ride you can cover both.
It is touch and go.
Arrival point from Havlock and Troy point for Northbay are different .
Avoid Dolfin ride it is not worth ,
Is Ross Island port blair and Ross and Smith twin island same?
Expedition18005
Howrah District, India22 contributions
Ross Island Port Blair and Ross and Smith twin island are not same. Ross and Smith island is situate and Diglipur. If u talk about Ross island which recently named as Netaji Subhash Chandra Deep then it is at PortBlair and can be accessed by spped boat by 10 minutes and see the island by foot in 1 and half hour to 2 hours. This island is the capital of PortBlair before independence in English era. The structures are depleted. A small museum and recently erected boards will describe the detail of the gone era of this island. But suggestion for u to must take the service Ms Rao the only guide of this island for very very long time. Seen her in the year 2003 and year 2019 also. She is emotionally attached with this island. A few videos are there in u tube. She not only describes the history but take care of the deer around. U can see lot of deer in this island. Near the Church u can see lot of peacock the symbol of purity. This island has lot of coconut tree and those trees are numbered. U will see crematorium, steam water purifier, swimming pool, man made pond with lotus. Donot miss the sea side of Ross Island from where u will see the open see and this part of this island was destroyed by tsunami, evidences are there. Now come to Ross and Smith twin island which is situated at North Andaman at Diglipur area. This can be accessed by speed boat from Aerial Bay in Diglipur area. Whenever u go to Aerial Bay say that u wish to go Ross and Smith twin island people are there who will take u by boat to the island a charge of 350Rs approx per head, and they will guide u to register ur names at the local police counter by showing ur government photo identity card. Start ur journey and feel the choppy sea if wind is there, but no need to get panicked and fear. Because u will be wearing florescent color life vest. Before planning MAKE SURE THAT U WILL BE REACHING AT THE ISLAND at low tide or JUST STARTED LOW TIDE. Because only at the low tide u can walk down the beautiful sand bar (comes up) from Smith the bigger island to Ross the smaller island. After this magical walk have ur bath at Smith island and enjoy sun shine depending on the season at the sea side chairs. Do not forget to see the colours of the sea water and change in it with the change of sun shine. Now you must plan Diglipur trip which had lot of attractions (RamNagar Beach, Mud volcano, Alfred Cave, trek to the Saddle peak the highest peak in Andaman and Nicobar Island, and Kalpong river hydro electric porject).
You can reach Diglipur from PortBlair by ship(very few), by Helicopter(Costly and seat availability very very few), AND by road. U can hire car. There are Government buses and privater buses. Government and private buses are also have night service from both end. It is a journey of 13hrs. But Jarwa reserve forest and nature bounty will not make ur travelling boring one. Do not forget to book ur accommodation at the Turtel Resort at diglipur from IP&T from PortBlair. If u do not get the accommodation there please do booking at Pristine Beach resort can be booked on line. Enjoy the trip.

Hello,
Hope you are doing good!
We are visiting Port Blair during the last week of this month and had a few questions regarding the same:
1) Is it required to buy the semi submarine tickets is advance online and what is the price of it? On their website it says 3.5k/person.
2) Is sea walking available in Havelock? if yes which one would you suggest. North bay or Havelock.
3)How much time would be required to cover both Ross island and North bay Island. can both be completed by 2pm and then head towards cellular jail.
Your suggestions and advice would be much appreciated.

We didn't do semi submarine. We did scuba diving in Havelock and it was amazing. No knowledge of swimming is required. Go to this company called Havelock divers, they might help you with sea walk and scuba both. We went to Ross island and it can be completed before lunch time. You can spend maximum 3 hrs there and be prepared to walk a lot. We didn't go to north bay bit we did visit neil island and it was fabulous! An evening drive to Chidiya tapu is also highly recommended. Beautiful place.
