Hectare upon hectare of heart – achingly beautiful flora
okt 2020.
Although categorised as a ‘moderate’ trek, the trek to the Valley of Flowers (and Hemkund Sahib, which is on the same route) is reasonably steep and difficult in parts. Having said that, it is worth exploring Valley of Flowers, Mana & Badrinath.
Valley of Flowers. The very phrase conjures up images of undulating meadows, carpeted with flowers of different colours and hues, going up the side of a gentle mountain. Once you get to THE Valley of Flowers, it’s not exactly that! Firstly, getting there is a 3.5Km trek from Ghangaria through some stunningly beautiful ruggedly wooded mountains. You cross over from one mountain face to the other. Finally, you exit from a heavily wooded thicket to emerge into the valley. And yes, it is carpeted with flowers, making exploring Valley of Flowers an immensely joyful experience.
You have to see the valley to believe it. It’s not just a meadow. It is hectare upon hectare of heart – achingly beautiful flora. The valley is stretched over mountains, dotted with gurgling streams and even a glacier!
Amazingly, once we got INTO the Valley of Flowers, it wasn’t cold. On the contrary, with the protection that the surrounding mountains offered, it was quite pleasant. So much so, that all the time we were exploring the Valley of Flowers, we’d removed our jackets altogether.
I haven’t ever come across such a surfeit of orchids. As far as the eye could see, they stretched away creating an unbelievable carpet of riotous colour. It was like something out of a fantasy, too beautiful to be real! To this day, I don’t know which emotion is stronger. Was it the joy that I could see something so magnificent in my life? Or the nagging sadness that nothing one sees from hereon can ever live up to this?!

Mountains, Valley and A Flower Bed - Ultimate Visual Spectacle
avg 2019.
I had heard a lot about the Valley of Flowers trek - A UNESCO World Heritage site and about the myth that how there were some who even fainted due to the strong fragrance of flowers in the Valley. Being a mountain lover, I decided to take up the challenge of this beautiful trek. It is basically a 4-Day monsoon trek (Mid June - Mid Sept) where you stay at Ghangaria for 3 nights. Out of the 4 days, you have to trek for 2 days to go to and fro to Ghangaria from Govindghat which is ~9.5 km each side.
In the remaining 2 days , you visit the Valley of Flowers 1 day (~9 km to and fro) and Hemkund Sahib on the 2nd (~12 km to and fro). The initial hour of the trek is a normal route through the forest and that's where you start seeing glimpses of what's in store in the Valley - numerous varieties of flowers that you've never seen before. There is a small river crossing after which you will start the actual climb towards the Valley. It takes about 3 - 3.5 hours to reach the valley, but you would have already seen a lot of colourful varieties by then. Make yourself comfortable on one of the rocks and enjoy the mesmerizing views of the far stretched flowers and distant snow covered mountains. I was able to click 50+ species of flowers which was incredible. You'll immediately forget your fatigue and get rejuvenated by this spectacle. This was an experience to savor for lifetime.

Walk in heaven.
okt 2018.
Hemkund and Valley of flowers are twin treks so best planned after monsoon. It starts late almost May end. Valley of flowers is not open then still under snow. VoF is only open before Monsoon start and treks here can be done in monsoon, but risky. So Mid August to October is when both can be done.
Day 1: Reach Pandukeshwar-Govind Ghat after Joshimath start early morning 10 km trek to base camp Ghangaria. Now shared jeeps drop you at start trek point. Ghangaria is your base for both places.
Day 2 and 3 take your pick. 7 Kms Hemkund Sahib and return same day total 14 kms. 5 Kms valley of Flowers and return trek same day total 10 kms.
Day 4:Trek down early return Joshimath/Haridwar.
Hemkund trek is bit hard and steep. Lots of rest and easy deep breathing may be needed. Use good Rubber soled trek shoes. Carry dry fruits, chocolates for energy. Camphor to breathe if you feel breathless. Emergency oxygen cylinder and medicines as per your fitness. Good walking breathing practice 2 months in preparation. Adequate cold and waterproof wear with thermal inner wear. In May - June 4-5 layers must as it is more cold.

Seniors trek to Valley of Flowers
avg 2019.
Ten of us, aged 60-70, decided to trek to Valley of Flowers this August (2019). We were apprehensive, given our age. We drove up to Govindghat (having stayed the night in Auli), and took the 5-minute helicopter ride to Ghagaria, the base for the trek to VoF (and Hemkund Sahib, a different direction from Ghagaria).
Ghagaria is at 3,050 meters. The trek to VoF takes you to 4,040 to 4,150 meters, within a space of 6.1 kms. Over a path paved with loose stones, and with a steep gradient at most places.
We had taken coolies just in case. There are "pitthu" who carry you in shoulder slung baskets, then there are "palki bearers" where a team of four carry you. However, most of us walked almost all the way, except two of us who had sedentary life styles and weighed over 100 kgs!
We had a tour guide, who had recommended proper clothes (rain wear, three layers for cold and wind protection, appropriate shoes, trekking stick, proper caps that covered the neck as well). We made it. Took us between 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 hours to climb, 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 to descend.
The flowers are there, but hugely over hyped. Expectations are over built. Nevertheless, the scenery is amazing. The wild river, at times rapids, at times waterfall, with its spray rising a hundred meters to form a moving wall of droplets and mist. The steep cliffs of the Himalayas. And even in mid-August, we saw glaciers. The greenery was amazing. We were lucky it did not rain that day.
The wonderful thing was we seniors could do it. Trek that much, at those elevations. We did feel breathless at times, but a few minutes rest was enough to recover. Even for two of us who have asthma problems.

VoF and Hemkunt Sahib from Ghangria
jul 2019.
VoF and Hemkunt Sahib trek should be combined in one trip. We stayed in Blue poppy swiss cottage tents at Ghangria and visited VoF on day one and Hemkunt Sahib on another day. Also visited river and waterfall (small treks) on third day. Ghangria is 11 km from Govindghat and one can trek to this place which takes around around 7 hours or can hire a mule or take helicopter ride depending on weather conditions. Helicopter costs Rs 2800 per side and mule costs around 1000. We went by trek one side and took helicopter for experience while returning.
VoF trek is very beautiful and must visit for trekking enthusiasts in India. You have to cross several streams, glaciers, waterfalls, mountain peaks to reach river bed which is around 7 km from check post. It takes around 10 hours up n down to go to river bed and come back. One should return by 5 pm to check post as the mandatory rule. First 4 km are steep climb and tough trek and you will be practically climbing one huge mountain. After that last 3 km to river bed will be full of different flowers and beautiful landscapes.U can have lunch at river bed and start from there back before 2 pm. Though guide is recommended but not necessary as there is one trail only.
Hemkunth sahib trek is quite difficult in terms of altitude, weather and oxygen levels. You will run out of oxygen at the last one thousand feet climb to 14000 ft based gurudwara. But it is so divine there and the view of divine lake beside gurudwara will make give you goosebumps and you can feel how heaven will be. Take this trek and travel fully prepared with water proof jackets/bag covers and shoes. Water repellent pants and warm jacket also should be taken. Trekking pole will be of added advantage or else atleast take bamboo stick for support which is available for Rs 20-30 there.

Hi,
The Itinerary you are planning for is Impossible to achieve due to the drastic change in altitude, it is extremely difficult to cover such a long route even if you are travelling on a pony. I would suggest the below itinerary:
Day 1 - Govind Ghat to Pulna by Jeep and then to Ghangaria on pony back. Stay at Ghangaria.
Day 2 - Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers and back (This journey takes up the whole day)
Day 3 - Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib and back (This one also would take up the whole day)
Day 4 - Ghangaria to Govindghat. The same day, you can Visit Badrinath Temple and stay may be at Joshimath in case you do not want to go back to Govindghat
Day 5 - Back to Rishikesh / Haridwar. When I had travelled last year, it took us nearly 14 hours to get back to Haridwar from Govindghat due to all the road blocks. So, I would suggest you to plan accordingly.

You will find decent number of flowers. Flowering is little late this season because of high snowfall in winters. You will see more flowers at Hemkund Sahib.
