Spent a gorgeous autumn day here with my family, including 2 kids aged 7 and 10. Not the usual thing you might do when on holidays in another country, but the kids had an absolute ball on all the play equipment and obstacle courses, the views to the alps were magnificent, and it was still a cultural experience watching dozens of tiny Japanese kids in school groups behaving perfectly and being simultaneously fascinated by and terrified of our two gigantic gaijin kids!

There are kilometres of walking tracks, if the rather sad "zoo" area doesn't take your fancy. We wandered down a road and onto a walking track, following a map which had lots of pictures but no english (fun to navigate with!), and discovered a beautiful traditional house, complete with irori, shoji and tatami mats. We still have no idea what it was used for, but it was completely open, deserted, spotlessly clean and serene. We had morning tea, shoes kicked off after having explored inside, sitting in the sun on the veranda, watching birds and butterflies flit from tree to tree. I don't know about other countries, but something similar in a park here in Australia would be filthy, vandalised and anything not chained down would have been stolen long ago. Ah, Japan.....

Save some time and some coins to ride the luge. We had so much fun on this that we missed the last bus back into town. We ended up walking all the way back - it's mostly downhill - via back streets which wound past a cemetery and a temple where we watched a mother and her young child stop to bow on their way home from school. LOVE Japan!

Beautiful park with great playground and great views! There is also a free petting zoo.
Park accesible by bus 45 leaving the station at 10am. Although it is worth noting there is only one bus back at approx 2:30pm. We took the bus there then walked home. Good choice as the park is up a big hill!
Take a picnic, only food options were a hot dog and hot chips and a drinks vending machine.

We didn't have much of a view the day we visited, but the site is scenic. Lots of people were playing croquet golf and many people were just walking. Be warned, however, about riding bikes, the hills are "upstairs" as the lady at the visitor center advised us.

If you cant catch bus, taxi will cost ard 1700yen from Matsumoto station.
Just take note that the only bus leave this park at 10:25am and 2:25pm. Or else you need to walk down. It is abt 4km to Matsumoto station.
Park is big, lots of play area for children, very limited foods though.
Luge is only operating on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Do check their operating hours.
Luge ride is cheap, children pay 1000yen for 6rides, adult is 2000yen.
Fun ride for children and adults too.
There is a small natural museum showing wildlife of that area.

We spent an enjoyable half day at the park. Our 7 year old LOVED the climbing wall and ropes obstacle course. You can go up the observation tower for free to get some good views of the mountains and city below. There was also a paid "luge" course that we all enjoyed going on and a little zoo.

Note, there is no food available to purchase at the park so you may want to bring a picnic with you, but there are vending machines for drinks. To get there, there is Bus that starts at Matsumoto bus station that arrives about 10:30am, but then only one bus back to the city at about 2:30pm. If you don't catch this last bus, you will need to walk back to the city, which isn't too far (1-2km).

We really enjoyed our time here and would highly recommend it for families!

There are 2 buses there/back a day but we walked, half of it uphill (not too bad though). We just followed the signs (in Japanese). You do get nice views of the mountains and there are places for kids to play as well as a petting zoo. The "Dream Coaster" roller sled (410 yen for a 630 slide) was closed at the end of the year and it was really quite cold so we didn't stay long even though it took over an hour to walk here (past the castle then the old elementary school and up the road). I think it would be much nicer at other times of the year. The Starbucks at Matsumoto Station had a sign saying that Alps Park has the biggest illuminations in Nagano but I'm not sure exactly where it is in the park.

...then visit this park. We had just an afternoon (after seeing the castle) in Matsumoto, so not enough time to get to the mountains. We spend a relaxing time in this park, taking some nice walks, enjoying the view, snacking on ice cream, and watching the mallet golf, school children playing and riding the coasters. Took a taxi from the castle, and rode the bus back to town.

The park is beautifully situated with fabulous views of the city and to the mountains on either side. There are great walks to be had, a mini-zoo with children's enclosure and a good playground. Do you enjoy crazy golf or putting? If so, you must have a go at mallet golf played with clubs that resemble croquet mallets. The course is very undulating and its great fun. But the locals take it very seriously and there are quite a few regulars, so be ready to let them play through.

For tourists, this park is too far from downtown (it'd take quite a while to walk up the large hill). But, if you can get a ride (or is there a bus?), it is super awesome! Good views, huge play area with jungle gyms and playgrounds, and even a type of rock climbing wall, with long slides.

For much of the year, the park also hosts an outdoor flea market on Sundays, once or twice a month. This flea market is focused on families. Families reserve a spot to put out all their old kids stuff to sell at dirt cheap prices to clear out their house! I can't wait until the flea markets start again.

The park is located at some 2,2 km from the station, the walk was a bit long and not so interesting. You better take a rental bike or a taxi. Also, it's quite a climb to get there. The admission is free. The park is nice but not spectacular, at least not in June when there is no blossom. The view is very nice at good weather. Go to the tower for the best views.
