If you are curious about technology or history this is a fascinating museum. Who knew the Egyptians invented the hourglass as an advance over water to tell time. There were candles for predetermined times (7 minute egg?). Early clocks were not fixed units - daytime units were shorter than nighttime and winter units were longer than springtime. I have never considered variable units of time. The exhibits included interesting mechanisms and the development of timekeeping. Oh, and a portable handheld sundial. Perhaps not so interesting for kids unless you are willing to explain.

I like quirky museums and this one certain qualifies. If you're in the area by all means visit. It's fun, not expensive, and doesn't take a lot of time to see.

The collection of Japanese clocks was interesting, with plenty of explanations In English. We were lucky to be there at a time when they played a couple of records on one of the hand crank photographs - Mozart and Beethoven. It seems that the Japanese took up western style classical music in the 19th century. Who knew?

Echo other reviewers – this museum is very small but holds some interesting collection of timepieces, both old & modern, from all over the world. It’s just a short walk from the JR station. Admission is only 300 yen, and the air con is really welcoming in a mid-summer day. Unless you're a big fan of clocks, don't expect something very exciting. But it is a nice stop-by if you happen to be in the neighbourhood.

We stopped at this museum walking back from Matsumoto Castle to the train station. It was so hot we wanted to stop and get some air conditioning. I'm glad we did. This was an odd museum of watches and clocks (mostly). There is not much there. You can finish in half an hour but what they do have was pretty fascinating. Some of the clocks, some dating back to the 1700s, are fascinating to behold. There was this totally racist clock of a Black man holding a guitar and inside the guitar was a clock. What was amazing what that his eyes moved up and down every second. It was unbelievable. I also really liked the cuckoo clocks. For 300 yen I am glad I stopped by. I was expecting more but what I saw was worth it. And make sure you are there on the hour to hear all the cuckoo clocks going off.

This is an amazing collection of timepieces not only from Japan but from all over the world. There were many unusual timepieces in styles I had never seen before in other museums. The pendulum clock outside is the largest in Japan.

Our 8 year old daughter was enthralled by this little museum, as were the adults! A very interesting private collection of timepieces across the ages. Short animations helped understand the timepieces such as the candle clock and sand timer. Children will also enjoy being able to stamp their book with the beautiful stamp on the second floor.

More than 300 timepieces most of which are fully functioning. Some very amazing clocks. Worth spending the time given it is on route to the castle.

Visited here with my husband on our way to Matsumoto Castle. English map is provided but little explanations in English on the displays. You can generally get the jist of the age/era from the Japanese descriptions. Quite small but multi-storey, you won't need too long to see everything. Try time your visit so you are there when all the clocks chime (or cuckoo) on the hour. We both found it interesting, and enjoyed looking in the shop afterwards. We ended up purchasing a local handmade clock and had several staff assist us with the purchase which was fun to witness. Note this museum does not accept credit card so if you intend on purchasing anything you'll need sufficient cash. Value for money and certainly something different!

I've never had any interest in clocks and watches but going here made me discover why people collect them. You will be surprised and the price is very cheap! You can see everything in 30-45 minutes and it's worth seeing.
