Good Tour

Visited here Saturday morning(10/4) and it was an interesting tour about the history of the place. Worth a look when you visit Ararat.

Fantastic and informative tour

We were the only visitors on the morning tour today and the welcome was definitely warm and the tour guides happy to see us. What a friendly and welcoming crew with so many interesting stories from this place. We left the tour, happy that the this piece of history has been saved and is so well curated, cared for and shared with the community. Many parts of this tour were sobering but worth thinking about. And the brief video from TV in the 1970s is well worth watching at the end of the tour too. Not to be missed.

Psychiatric institution for the criminally insane
mar 2021.
J Ward was established as a jail in the 1860s and then became a psychiatric institution for the criminally insane. Several men were hanged there for murder. No-one wanted to be incarcerated in J Ward, except perhaps for Mark "Chopper" Read, gangland stand-over man and executioner, who became a best-selling author. J Ward closed as in 1991 and re-opened in 1993 as a museum. It's a spooky place, worth a visit.

Informative
mar 2021. • Samostalno
There was a mix up by staff with my booking that led to some phone calls and rearranging prior but mostly sorted. The tour itself was informative. John, our guide, complemented the tour with facts and humour. Made for an interesting afternoon if you like historical prison tours.

Fantastic and informative tour

Alan was an excellent tour guide today, he has some great stories to tell of the prisoners and patients of the time, the grounds are very well preserved and the friends of Jward (volunteers) are doing a fantastic job of maintaining our history here.

Amazing tour

Went on the tour with little knowledge about J Ward. Left J Ward amazed on the knowledge of the volunteer who guided us around the site. Mesmerising stories of patients and inmates who were housed there and developing psychiatric care from then to closure. Well worth the visit and I recommend the tour to anyone visiting Ararat.

An informative and emotional experience.

I was lucky enough to be the only person booked in on this tour so I enjoyed personalised attention from Pat, my volunteer guide. There was plenty of opportunity to ask questions and make comments though the information Pat delivered was comprehensive - and so interesting. It was a thought provoking visit. It's so important that history is not forgotten. Hopefully we can learn from it.

Just Go.

This was our second visit and it is still great, The history of the treatment of people in the past is a real eye opener. The place is run by volunteers and the tour is a credit to them.

Interesting

Given detailed commentary on all events that happened at J Ward. Only problem is whoever takes lead of the tour must talk louder to enable everyone to hear including the partially deaf
