Lovely colors inside this church, lots of pale blue and gold. Filled with flowers when we visited as there was about to be a wedding. Lots of steps to get up to it though.

First of all, this church is set in a jaw-dropping setting! There is a reason Monica is a UNESCO World Heritage Site--what an amazing historical site, full of culture! We stopped for a panoramic view of the town, way, way up--it's stunning. The church is on the main street, so you cannot miss it, and it is a definite must see--inside and out.

Located on Corso Umberto I, this church does not have the same lofty location as Chiesa di San Giorgio, but the statues flanking the few steps in front of the church do give the entrance a somewhat grand feel.

The grand stairs that lead to the inside should give you a clue of what to expect inside. It's baroque at its best.

This is another baroque jewel in Modica. This church rivals San Giorgio in many ways. Concerts are held in this church. Check for posters on the church gates. There is usually a free concert held on the feast of San Stefano (26 December). Baroque music in a baroque church. Lovely!

Modica has two cathedrals less than a 500 metre walk from one another, Cattedrale di San Giorgio in Modica Alta and Cattedrale di San Pietro in Modica Bassa.
Located on Corso Umberto I, Cattedrale di San Pietro doesn't have the spectacular location of its cousin, Cattedrale di San Giorgio up on the hill, nor does it have the imposing façade of the latter. What they do have in common with one another is the monumental staircase, although San Giorgio’s steps are a tad more vigorous. That being said, the San Pietro staircase is mighty impressive, adorned with statues of the Twelve Apostles upon pedestals.
The façade of San Pietro is elaborate, full of carved scrolls and statues of St. Cataldo, St. Rosalia, St. Peter and Madonna. At the top is a high relief of Jesus, while above the central portal are the coat of arms of St. Peter.
The nave features frescoes depicting Biblical scenes and medallions of saints. The frescoes were started in 1760 and completed in 1780, they are the work of Gian Battista Ragazzi and his son Stefano. The marble floor prominently in black and white is beautiful.
There has been mention of a church here since 1308 and the current structure is built on the foundations of a 17th century church. Reconstruction started on the cathedral in 1697 after the 1693 earthquake, with the work being supervised by Mario Spata and Rosario Boscarino.
It is hard not to compare the two cathedrals and for location San Giorgio can’t be beat, nor can its imposing façade, however the façade of San Pietro is also pretty impressive. The interior of San Pietro personally is a hands down winner, with the beautiful marble floor and nave frescoes.

The Baroque style of so many of the cathedrals in the south of Sicily can be boring because everything is the same color. But wait till you get inside. Wow, so beautiful.
