Charming Umbrian town
jul 2019.
This cute Umbrian town is a perfect place to while away an afternoon or morning. For the most part it is not on the radar of tourists and feels authentic, in a way, that many towns of similar charm with hordes of tourists do not.

Visit to Narni Sotteranea

A visit to the sub terranean ruins of an old monastery in Narni is a must when visiting the area. If great historical interest it gives an insight into the early days of the inquisition in Italy.

Outstanding

If you like medieval towns then this is it. Fairly compact and amazingly clean and orderly. So many interesting things to see and just take it all in. I would go out of my way to spend a minimum of several hours here.

Narni (the Narnia of CS Lewis' Narnia, and home of Blessed Lucy of Narnia) is a delightful Roman town filled with food, music and architecture.

My definition of paradise. Studying Italian verbs here would be fun. Using them to write letters would be even better.

This was a wonderful town then. If you want a compelling reason not to rush hurriedly forward to see Perugia and Assisi as if there was nothing else to see in this part of central Italy here it is in its splendor. A compact picturesque old town that has its place among the hill towns of Italy, Narni deserves your close attention if you are willing to avoid the touristy places not too far away in Umbria. Narrow streets and buildings with origins going back many years - like centuries maybe - this small hill town caught my attention when I was traveling by train and decided to get as close to it as I could by taking the bus to the Centro Storico and walking the short distance. This town was a delight to see as it is the central part of the country geographically speaking. This is required visiting for those of you finding yourself in this part to Italy with little to do. Few tourists were there. Untouched by modern development this hill town made me think seriously about where to spend my retirement. Businesses that meet the needs of tourists were not to found. I was living in a house close to Orvieto and I decided to use my eur-rail pass to explore the country from Orvieto to Umbria. Stopping there was the best decision I made that week. The detour from my original plans was worth taking. It was many years ago long before the customary range of calendar dates suitable for indicating the time of my visit were made available for completing this review. I recall important facts that made me like being there. I will agree that there was an authentic ambiance there. I will give up staying in Venice, Rome, Milan and Florence with their large crowds and stay in Narni instead. It is as simple as that. No tourists were on the streets! Think about that for twenty two minutes. Times were different then and I realize now that traveling has changed most dramatically since those earlier days. Italy is not the same. My definition of paradise. Pay attention to the fountain and buildings and forget about attempts made by travel agents with their promises to get you away from tourists in Venice. That is a hoax. It was as if time stopped maybe two hundred years ago - this is where I should have started to study Italian maybe three or four more times over and over. Think about with or without the use of your verb wheel conjugating the trapassato remoto of seventeen of your favorite Italian verbs here. Highly recommended with many beautiful views. Quiet and peaceful and charming. Photography is necessary but do not wander aimlessly through the streets munching on two ham sandwiches or drinking a milk shake. Be more respectful for this place is an essential part of the cultural heritage of Italy. Do not bring your pet dog. Probably more suitable for adults than younger children. I brought with me that summer a degree in urban studies that touched on city planning and much college level knowledge of Italian as well as a degree in French and History. When I returned home I continued to study all relevant disciplines that helped me adjust to Italy and I needed more knowledge of architectural design and art history. By talking with the local people there I did ask questions and I learned something vital about costs for restoration and maintenance as well as repair. But this strategy was effective for getting me to know them. I suggest that you do the same for the same purpose. I did not want to leave and I stayed there for two hours just to admire the center of town but as I found out there was much more to like about this town than just the center. Read my other reviews. I had visited the small towns in the Apennines like Pretare near Ascoli Piceno. There is a comparison to be made.
