Nice embroideries for purchase
feb 2020.
As the name suggests this is a place where women work on making nice embroidered clothes and materials. There is someone around who can help you have a look around. I just had a quick look around, took some rest in the shade and was on my way.

A heritage property empowering women!
feb 2020.
This heritage property dating 1774, gives hope and a better future to disadvantaged women of the city. It empowers them not just with skill and employment, but also the opportunity to create something of lasting beauty and value. Their fine needlework is pure sublime.
Sr. Augusta manages the property and set up efficiently and with great care.
If you are persistent, you may be lucky to spot some original tiles from the 18th century!

This place is a must visit for a lover of all things fine.

Buy lovely embroideries for a good cause
feb 2020.
This beautiful heritage building now houses several dozen Sisters and volunteers who spend their days embroidering the items that are on sale in the small shop located on its premises. The courtyard is small but offers some respite from the Pondicherry sun and no one seemed to mind that we just enjoyed sitting amongst the flowers while there. There's no entrance fee, and someone is always on site to tell you about the centre and the work the Sisters do.

Fabulous work
jan 2020.
Every time we go to Pondy we have to visit the Cluny Centre. It is such an endearing place of harmony and peace and industry. Fascinating to see a huge room full of women performing miracles with tiny needles. Their work is exquisite and we always come away with beautifully embroidered linen which is almost too perfect to use. Do not go to Pondicherry without seeing this.

A place of historical importance
jul 2019.
Went to this place as part of our guided walk of the White Town. The place has beautiful murals on the walls depicting the French culture and their contributions to Pondicherry.

Loved the building more than the embroidery. Extremely artistic embroidery, but beyond my budget.

There are 2 reasons why Cluny’s would interest you. Firstly, it is a wonderful French heritage building. It was built by Lagrenee de Mezieres, who was a member of the Governor’s council – a big man. In 1829 the owners seem to have handed this building to catholic nuns. This was a good move, not only because they used it for charitable purposes, but also because they looked after the heritage building carefully. The entrance is impressive --- solid columns like a typical colonial building, high roof built over teak-wood beams, fine floors with chessboard-like black & white checks. The main doorway is adorned with 2 lovely ornamental bas-reliefs. This seems to have been done only by plasterwork, so it speaks highly of the craftsmen who did it and the nuns who maintained it!
The second and obvious reason is that this place is famous for embroidery work. The nuns have taught this skill to destitute women, who produce fine art with their needles. But the products are expensive (because of the skill and effort that goes in) and so you may not buy unless you are a keen lover of this art or you have planned purpose/occasion for a piece.
On one side of the building is the show room and the other side is the workshop were the crafts-women focus on their work. We could see the ladies working, but were not allowed inside the workshop where the women were working; a pity really, because we wanted to see how these talented people work!
Sadly, photography is prohibited inside the building. So, we got no pictures of the beautiful productions. We were allowed to take pictures from outside and I have reproduced those pics here.

Exquisite Embroidery
okt 2018. • Parovi
The center was next door to our accommodation but sadly, we were able to visit it only on our last day here. In hindsight, maybe that was better; else we would have ended up buying more stuff. The center is run by nuns.
Here destitute women are taught embroidery (which is then sold) to help them get back on their feet. If supporting this noble cause isn't a good enough reason for you to buy some of the merchandise, you just have to take a look at the exquisite handiwork pieces.
It's difficult to believe such neatness can result from handwork. The designs are delicate & pretty. You will find towels, table mats, tablecloths, napkins etc. here. They also embroider on order, which means you can send your design & the platform, & they will conjure it up for you.
The cloth color is mainly white which made us frame the embroidery (instead of using it) to not spoil the cloth. Lastly, it is on the expensive side but absolutely worth it.

One of the most interesting places, Cluny Embroidery Centre is where you can see underprivileged women working wonders with their hand stitched designs. The workshop is run by a local convent and offers some of the most stunning vintage handicrafts not found anywhere else in Pondicherry. Along with appreciating the brilliant work done at this heritage French bungalow, Cluny Embroidery Centre offers many shopping opportunities for tourists.
