Interesting and controversial

We spotted this item on a walk along the cliffs on Oct 8th 2018.
My wife is American, and she recalled hearing of this spat in school, so was tickled to be at the very spot of one of our National Humiliations! John Paul Jones was clearly a Navel Officer of the highest skill and dash. Just a shame he wasn't fighting for us Brits. As an aside and an historical musing- was the USA at this early stage in its history a 'sovereign state' in the accepted sense, that is, recognised as such by other nations? If not, was it just a rebellious colony, then? So, John Paul Jones- brilliant strategist certainly- but guilty of an act of piracy, rather than an act of war? What do our American visitors think? Discuss!

A really interesting feature near the lighthouse

I didnt realise the Greenwich Meridian passes through Flamborough Head but this little feature tells you all about it! There are milages to all for points of the UK and Ireland to help you get your bearings.

Did you know: it's just as far from here to Lands End, as it is to John O Groats?

You won't spend long at the toposcope, but you won't want to miss it while you visit the beach, lighthouses and view the limestone caves.

Unusual tribute to an important naval battle

On entering Flamborough Village, follow the signposts to the Flamborough Lighthouse (B1259) on Flamborough Head. Park up in the large Car Park adjacent to the Headlands Family Restaurant and Café Bar. Walk towards the cliff edge overlooking Selwicks Bay Beach. You will see what looks like a cone-shaped concrete litter bin studded with large pebbles, but is in fact a Toposcope (a marker erected on hills or high places which indicates the direction, and usually the distance, to notable landscape features which can be seen from that point). There is also a long brass spur jutted out towards the scene of the Battle of Flamborough Head, an with explanatory plaque.
This commemorates the naval battle that took place on 23 September 1779, between an American Continental Navy squadron led by John Paul Jones (the Father of the American Navy) and the two British escort vessels protecting a large merchant convoy. This Battle is still on the America Schools’ Curriculum, as it is regarded by them as the most important Sea Battle of the American War of Independence.
This commemorates the naval battle that took place on 23 September 1779, between an American Continental Navy squadron led by John Paul Jones (the Father of the American Navy) and the two British escort vessels protecting a large merchant convoy.
