Tuesday 20th June and we drove to this mountain settlement. It is believed to be the oldest village on the island and is located in the interior section of the Island.

We parked our car up in the parking area outside of the village and we commenced our exploration and visit to Kastro. One of the first sights we saw was the unusual tree water feature.

We followed the main pathway which led us to the small Chapel, Perekklḗsi, the outermost reaches of the village, it was closed at the time of our visit.

Along the pathway there is a turn to the right leading to the main section of the Village and the Church of Saint Athanassios, which was built in the 15th century.

It is was fascinating to see ths stone built buildings with the traditional slate roofs which had been or were in the process of being rebuilt and restored in the traditional style. Kastro was designated an historic monument in 1880.

At an altitude of 800 metres there are some stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes

There are two tavernas here, Kastro we passed on our way to the Chapel. As we walked by the owner handed us a leaflet with information about the Village and his Taverna.

The second Taverna, Kostas, is beside the Church of Saint Athanassios.

There are number of small shops in the Village, predominantly selling tourist souvenirs and other products.

It almost felt if time had stopped and we had entered a different time zone as we walked around absorbing the atmosphere of this special place.

We parked at the first car park when we saw the sign for a car park. We then had a five minute walk downhill to the village. There is parking further down.
The views are fabulous and it was lovely to see the old buildings. Had lunch at Kostas which was lovely.

We have just returned from Thassos and were pleasantly suprised to find out the road up to the village of Kastro had been asphalted. We have not visited Kastro before, mainly because of the road and not having a jeep to navigate the previous track. The new road is great, takes about 20 minutes to drive to the village, whilst being able to take in the fabulous views.
The day we went was quite cloudy, but the whole experience was atmospheric - from the silence of the mountain to the lovely old houses, especially so when we visited the bone house behind the church.
Well worth visiting.

We drove upto this gem from near limeneria one morning, parked a 100m from village and walked through it. We were welcomed by Kosta on the way in at the taverna ( he and his dog are the only permanent residents of the village) he told us about the village past and present. Many houses are being renovated these are owned by people who work in limeneria in the summer and live there in winter. The views from the edge of the village were amazing we visited the tiny church and beyond to the stone building holding the skeletons of the former villagers/close area, an eerie place. On our walk back we took a drink at kostas , lemonade with honey (delicious) made from bees he keeps and lemons he grows.

When you see the well-preserved homes, you feel disappointed because it's supposed to be a deserted village. But then, after exploring it a little more, you find out that there's one person actually living there - Kosta, who owns a tavern.
The view is magnificent, but make sure you get there using the freeway and not the forest road because that's difficult and more suitable for an off-road vehicle.

This is the 3rd time we visited this tinny small ancient village. Situated on the top of the mountain, in the middle of Thassos Island, this is a unique and peaceful place. Houses that are rebuild with ancient stones, dust roads, Church, taverna and 360 degrees view. Amazing! The photos are not expressing the feeling while being here.
The road is 7 km from Potos, and it is newly renovated, perfect drive!
Strongly recommend it , number 1 trip before any other on this beautiful island!

In the last 6-7 years, since the reconstruction of the old traditional houses from Kastro began, the number of tourists visiting this place was not very high, due to the 12 km gravel road that was not very good in the last section. Consequently, the tourist that usually arrived up to Kastro were the tourists that were undertaken the "safari" trip.
Up there you were able to see a few restored stone houses, the very old church and two very picturesque tavernas.
The surrounding landscape is typical for this part of Thassos Island and you will better understand the ancient history of the Greek islands. The villages were built in such a remote and difficult to reach places due to the fear of the Turkish pirates.
Kastro was abandoned in the late years of the XIX century, when the people move down towards the sea shoreline and buld up the present new villages: Limenaria, Pefkari, Potos, So for more than 100 years Kastro was forgotten and bring back as a tourist attraction in the last 10 years.
Now with the just finished new road, the number of tourists reaching Kastro will grow exponentially, but I think that also the authenticity of the place will diminish due to the new commercial businesses that will developed there.
Anyhow, with such an easy access, Kastro should be visited nevertheless because for the moment is more authentic than Theologos.

Visited as part of a day excursion and we thoroughly fell for Kastro. Whether its the 360 degree views, games and ouzo at Kostas Bar, the quiet solitude, the remains, the renovation or the house of bones, I don't believe you cannot be impressed with a visit to Kastro. The road to the outskirts of the abandoned village is fine, but off road vehicles are best used if you want to get into the centre of the village without walking. Will re-visit the next time we are in Thassos to see hoe the restoration work has progressed.

An old small stone village lost on the top of a mountain, waiting to ve discovered. Breath in the clean refreshing mountain air and enjoy the magnificent view. Walk along the narrow streets and don't forget to visit the 600 year old orthodox church of Saint Athanasios. The cafe owner will be more than glad to unlock the main door of the church and give you some information in Greek, German or English language. If you stop at the kafeneion (cafe) next to the church for a coffe or tsipouro please try the rice stuffed pumpkin flowers. It is a traditional delicacy rarely found at a mainstream tavern.

This is a small village in the mountains, accessible by car, a lot of old houses, some are being restored, very few people live there but a walk through the village offers a nice piece of history to admire.
