Easy access from #132 registration was simple ! I was a little disappointed we could not reserve a yurt or another shelter for one night. It is a minimum of two nights due to cleaning. irregardless we were travelling in our RV so all was fine. The site was nice, clean and great scenery. The comfort station is a little bit dated inside, but clean careful in the shower as the lights are censored and turn off after I believe 10 minutes, you must remove yourself from the shower to be sensered so the light will come on giggle giggle, overall we loved it and we will return.

REVIEW CLIMBING THE POINTE-AU-PÈRE LIGHTHOUSE Be ready to climb 128 steps to reach the top! 4*
The Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse Station has been a symbol of the Rimouski region since 1909, it is the second highest in Canada. Its light was essential for sailors exploring the St. Lawrence River. The lighthouse stands at 33 metres (108 feet), making it the 2nd tallest in Canada.

Entrance is timed and there are only 14 participants permitted entrance at a time. There were 128 steps to climb to reach the viewing platform and it was well worth the effort. Once we reached the top, you had to manoeuver through a tight hatch before emerging on the walkway. A park guide was on hand to provide a short commentary, although my understanding of French is very good, he spoke so fast that I gave up trying to follow him, several other French speaking guest also asked him to slow down, but he had only one speed - FAST. We stayed behind for about 10 minutes after everyone left and my husband, who is French Canadian, provided a synopsis.

The view from the top was amazing and the St Lawrence River looked incredible. On the shore of what is considered one of the most difficult waterways to navigate, the Pointe-au-Père navigational aid station provided the best pilots to take charge of ships sailing between North America and Europe, making it a vital site.
We not only climbed to the top of the lighthouse but also visited several other buildings: the keeper’s house and the foghorn station which exhibits the lighthouses of St Lawrence and their sound signals.

Review The Empress of Ireland Museum Discover Canada’s worst maritime disaster 5*
This museum tells the story of the tragic collision of the once-elegant ocean liner, The Empress of Ireland, used primarily to transport European immigrants from England to Canada in the early years of the 20th century. I had no knowledge of Canada’s worst maritime disaster until I began researching sites to visit. RMS Empress of Ireland was a Scottish built ocean liner that sank near the mouth of the St Lawrence River following a collision in thick fog with the Norwegian collier Storstad in the early hours of 29 May 1914.

Although the ship was equipped with watertight compartments and, in the aftermath of the Titanic disaster two years earlier, carried more than enough lifeboats for all aboard, she foundered in only 14 minutes. Of the 1,477 people on board, 1,012 died, making it the worst peacetime marine disaster in Canadian history.

Located in a building designed to look like a ship listing on its side, the museum houses carefully assembled and restored artifacts. The touching eye-witness accounts of survivors bring to life the sinking and the heroic rescue efforts of this greatest maritime disaster in Canadian history. Exhibits are presented on both English and French and there are several interactive exhibits to keep young ones interested.

I was particularly captivated by the exhibit listing all the passengers and crew, their background and whether they perished. Additionally, both Captains survived and each provided different accounts of the collision during the inquiry.
In the province of Quebec, shipwrecks are not afforded protection and drivers plundered items from the site as the Empress of the Ireland rests at relatively shallow depth of 40 meters. In 1999 the wreck was declared a site of historical and archaeological importance and thus became protected under the Cultural Property Act and was listed in the register of Historic Sites of Canada.

If there is a historic site worth visiting, this is the one. It would be a good idea to set aside at least 1 to 1 1/2 hours for both, the museum and the viewing of the beautifully made film, and to bear in mind that there can be some relatively short waiting times, for the film in particular. Keep your eye on the screen as you find your seat as your actions are projected on to the screen.

Review The Onondaga submarine: Enjoy a unique experience 5*
The Onondaga is Canada’s first publicly accessible submarine. We picked up our audio headsets at the visitor’s centre, walked the gangplank, and learned about the day-to-day lives of the 60 - 70 men who were confined within its steel hull. Even with both doors open, I was soon feeling claustrophobic and had to take deep, calming breaths to continue. I could not even fathom how so many men, lived in such tight quarters, underwater, without fresh air, for months at a time.

I found our tour fascinating, even though the machine was hideous. The kitchen, where cooks had to prepare three (3) nutritious meals a day, along with snacks, was about the size of my broom closet! My husband was drawn towards the complex mechanics of the submarine and the technology used for underwater detection. As a retired air traffic controller, he thoroughly examined the various radar scopes and took dozens of pictures.

While the Oberon-class Onandaga is a Canadian post-world war II vessel, our thoughts went back to the devastation many of these boats have caused during the war, yet we couldn't help being touched by the courage and commitment of the men who served under these conditions. The 17 station audio-guide revealed some interesting aspects of their day-to-day lives on board, and I highly recommend taking the time to visit this site.

What a gem! We stopped here with our 10 and 14 year old girls and had a blast. I have never seen such a great park- water park, piano, toys (frisbees, balls etc), adult exercise park, climbing equipment- all in the river front. A great picnic spot for all ages!

I biked today from Rimouski to Saint Flavi and had a great time! It took me one hour and 15 minutes and most of the time was spent on a dedicated bike trail that had access points to bathrooms, water and bike pumps!! Passed through lovely towns en route. There is a great canteen in Saint Flavi which has awesome seafood and lobster rolls!

Leading up to the house itself, were educational English/French information panels on the building practices through the eras ending with the construction method used for the Lamontagne house. The costumed guides were friendly, knowledgeable and during the Covid-19 re-opening, extremely respectful of precautions. One guide a 10 minute presentation on the history of the time and explained the background of the house; bravo to her as it was clear and done well! The house itself had information in French only. However, we are bilingual and did not have a problem. Extremely well-done, learned a lot, and worth the stop. There are steep stairs to the second floor of the house; something to be aware of.

Great help and information that allowed us to plan how many days we would be spending in each general area as we drove around the Gaspe Peninsula.
