Rent a boat in La Spezia, take the boat to the last of the 5 cities. Take a plunge and enjoy the view from the seaside away from all the people.
Go with the boat close to the shore and stop on the way to take a swim. Some places you can swim to shore and hang on the beach .

A super wee museum about la spezia's strategic naval role in italy s explorations and defence but italy's role in ww2 seemed a little underplayed. We loved the dedicated marconi room, fantastic scale models and a whole air conditioned room of artistic original and restored ship figureheads. We went on a Monday and it was free! Well worth a visit if you are based in la spezia and want a day off from the cinque terre. Don't miss the ww2 air raid shelters sound and light show off the main pedestrian street too.

Visit the museo di sigillo upstairs - every signature ring and seal found in Liguria and beyond ( one set came from Jersey). Then marvel at the exquisite illuminated manuscripts and paintings downstairs. Buy the 7 museums ticket - 7 museums ( well, at least 2 are on the Museo Civico Amedeo Lia site, although it felt as if there were 3 museums worth of interesting things to look at ) for €10. It’s good for 3 days.

A visit to at least the castle terraces is a must if you are in la spezia. You can buy a ticket just for the views and you don't need to pay to go in to the archaeological museum which is well laid out but a bit light weight and centred on the Romans. The terrace views are fabulous especially if you like spying all the different rook gardens and the entry funicular is fun.

Do you remeber the wolf in the Disney's movie "The sword in the stone?"
Well, that's was me on my way back to the car. But Monesteroli is really worth it.
The view is stunning and once you reach the end of the stair you can swim in the sea and chill.
I recommend trekking in warm but not hot months; so May,early June, September & October (according to the weather) are perfect.

On Via del Prione you find a nice offer from various stores. Also for food there are different opportunities for shopping.

The person riding that horse statue is Mr. Giuseppe.....who is a very prominent figure in Italian history. It is a fitting statue for a man who has fought so hard for his country. It is definitely the main statue in the town of La Spezia, occupying the main public park. It is definitely a beautiful sight to behold.

Mostly precinct area and with an open air but covered market selling fresh produce. Plenty of cafes and restuarants for refreshment on the way.

Guidebooks don’t generally encourage tourists to visit La Spezia. It’s a busy, industrial, working town and it’s missing a charming historic centre.
Sadly, most of the buildings that once marked the historic centre, were destroyed by successive bombing raids during WWII that targeted the port which harboured an Italian military fleet.
Post-war reconstruction concentrated on clearing away the ruins and rubble and re-building so that much of La Spezia is modern.
Like most tourists who choose to stay here, we used it as a base for visiting the Cinque Terre towns. Our exploration of La Spezia was limited to some evening strolls around the Piazza Garibaldi area.
Unexpectedly, we found this a pleasant area to walk around. It was lively, with restaurants and late night gelato shops and pedestrian free zones.
Surprisingly, many Art Nouveau palazzos, that once belonged to the local aristocracy, can still be seen. Built at the end of the 19th century and in the first decades of the 20th century, we enjoyed spotting these survivors that dodged the WWII bombs.
They can be recognised by their ‘Liberty style’ and can be easily seen around Piazza Garibaldi, along Via Fiume, and Corso Cavour.
One of the best is Palazzo Maggiani, built 1900-1902 along Corso Cavour. The well preserved facade has sculptures and friezes, mainly of female figures, over the whole building. Scantily clad female figures in are extravagantly draped over the main doors. We could pick out swans, shells and sunflowers amongst the flamboyant decorations. It’s all beautifully OTT.
Palazzo Bianchi-Cavallo, on via Fiume, also caught our eye. There were more curvy female figures. Two semi-dressed figures in loosely wrapped clothes, have an arm outstretched as if holding up the frame of the main entrance. They reminded us of Art Nouveau versions of the ancient Greek caryatids.
Overall, La Spezia’s historic centre was not without charm but you had to keep an eye out to find it.

Situated in a main street, complete with market when we visited, The church is interesting both inside and outside with it's distinctive horizontal lines.
