Remembrance parks like this one in Venice were established in Italy since the early 1920s. They served to instill a sense of pride in being Italian by remembering the sacrifice of the soldiers who died during WOI. Each tree was to symbolize a fallen soldier. The trees were often in care of children. After the period of fascism these parks were often neglected or disappeared altogether. However, the one in Venice survived the times. Its south side borders the San Marco basin. It is a lovely quiet green zone with pine trees and grassy spaces.

This garden was smaller than I anticipated but given the most limited 'green space' on the island, I guess it has a large appeal.
The building is a Grand Palazzo & was impressive as it fronted the Grand Canal, with a side entrance also off a small canal ... maybe the tradesman's entrance?
In the ground floor foyer is an old Gondola that also had the Funeral Hood which was typical of their original use.

After wandering down via gabrialdi, we crossed a long wooden bridge and entered this rather strange desolate bleak, poor part of the city.

There is a large grassed area, not very well looked after and a strange church called san pietro di castello which apparently dates back to 1557.

Hardly a local venetian about, little or no tourists
