caught the bus up to the top for wonderful views and a very nice cooling breeze - a change form the oppressive city heat. nice place to sit down for a while and relax. Shame its not looked after a bit better, so much litter, and a lovely statue of santa rosalia sprayed with graffiti - so sad. hard to find any reliable info on the bus, but caught the 812 bus from just off Piazza Don Luigi Sturzo. Info states that they go every 1hr 15mins, but in reality seem to be every 15mins, passed 2 on the way up and saw three leave during our 1 hour visit. 15min stroll back down the road gets you to the church of S. Rosalia and a couple of nice cafes and a few tat stalls. All things considered, a very nice morning out.

Terrasini is more low key than other places and although it’s a large town it doesn’t feel large. Nice setting on the water and with the backdrop of the mountains.

Go there for romantic sunsets and spend some peaceful moments. This is possible despite the popularity of the sight.

The coastline north of Catania is very different from the sandy beaches towards the south. Lava streams from Etna reached the sea here during past centuries. The rock formations are stunning. The vegetation of cacti and succulents is special. Here and there are coves where people can reach the sea and boats can find shelter. Along the coast there is a promenade that is excellent for a walk.

    Do not visit.

We had a week booked here in September 2022 but left after 3 days as the place is terrible.

There is nothing here for tourists to do or see apart from some restaurants and a harbour.

We expected a quaint fishing harbour but unfortunately we got a dirty, run down and unsafe fishing village. The beach is small and stoney and any decent beaches are a train ride away.

The paths are virtually non existent and when there are paths they are broken and uneven. The roads are not much better. Not a place for people who do not drive or more importantly have mobility issues !

Ran the Targa Florio Piccolo course in the counter-clockwise direction in May 2023 in my 1969 Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600. It was absolutely incredible from a natural beauty standpoint. There were several areas where I think only people driving the course would get to see the views presented of the magnificent Le Madonie national park. The road surface is another thing entirely. There were several areas where only one car could pass due to large portions of the road collapsing away and you never know what would come over the next hill or around the next corner. At one point an entire hill was washed out and covered in dirt/gravel. There was also a large closed section before getting to Caltavulturo which resulted in an interesting detour under the autostrada in a culvert pipe converted to a road. I was able to transit all of it, but if there has been ANY rain in the last day or so I would highly advise against attempting some of these roads in a classic. Everyone knows the best off-road vehicle is a rental car though, so if you have one of those go ahead. Caltavulturo is a lovely town to eat lunch in as is Collesano. All in all, a great trip and one of spectacular beauty, but beware of the road. The signs all say it's a project funded by the EU to restore, and I really hope they do soon. It took several hours as average speed definitely didn't exceed 30-40km/hr. At the beginning you can go a bit faster, and at the end, but the traverse of the park is so broken up that it's just not worth the risk to go for it at higher speeds unless you don't like your exhaust system, tires, or suspension and want an excuse to start replacing things.

No denying, it's an experience whether you going over it on the SS115, or under it, say en route via SP54 to Scicli. There's a limit to what you can see when in an average sized car, but even so you sense 'the experience' on this, Sicily's highest bridge. Another approach is to view from a distance, say from near Modica's market along the via Fiumara. There again, you could get an aerial view by watching the opening credits of Montalbano!

If you want to have a wonderful horseback riding experience in the wonderful nature of Etna, Petra’s place is highly recommended. The horses are super friendly, experienced and perfect for a trail ride or for a first experience for beginners. Petra is a very good teacher with good instruction. The small farm with its animals is made with a lot of love and perfect for families.
It is a perfect way to explore the beautiful surrounding of Etna.
