Excellent facility! I come here regularly, very relaxing spa and baths and a bedrock sauna where you can fall asleep! It also has a massage room and information about the history of Japanese Onsen. The staff are very helpful and the food is fantastic, highly recommended.

    Beautiful onsen
Lots of options as to where to go. One on the corner looked the most beautiful but toilets were out of order.

Took a taxi from Kamikochi 6-7k yen as the bus timings didn’t work out. (Train from Matsumoto to shin-shimashima- onto to kamikochi)
Possible to stay here in the hotels (wish we’d known)
This place is quiet and peaceful. It’s not geared up for crowds.
We caught the bus out one every couple of hours. Bus time available from matsumoto.
Time your onsen trip to get out 30 mins before the bus, to reduce the wait.
Onsen 1400 for two plus 200yen for towels.

After hiking through the snow in Norikura, I spent some time in the milky hot outdoor baths. I was expecting mountain views but there were only glimpses. Facilities are good and it is welcoming to foreigners, with some English spoken. Y720 entry plus more for a towel if you didn't bring one. The cafe is large and has good soba noodles plus a range of pizzas. A great place to kill time before your return bus as it is diagonally opposite the tourist centre stop ("Kanko center mae").

This facility was in the Asama hot spring area. It was reccomended as a day onsen. The other day onsen was closed on the day we were in Matsumoto. It can be reached by bus from Matsumoto station with a little walk uphill. However, my google map pinned it on a diferent side of the street. Although there was a big sign, it was in Japanese. After asking thr local and trying to match the japanese charactors from Google map and on the sign for a while, I realized that we arrived at the place. The place was not big but there was almost noone except us. Therefore, we had a nice quiet relax in the pool. The waiting area was large. It was an enjoyable moment after a long day walking.

Although it is quite hard to get to Shirahone Onsen if you don't have a car, this unusually mikly white Onsen is worth visiting and we certainly think this is the best public open-air onsen we have ever visited. We visited at around 10am and found ourselves totally alone! It is kept very clean and well looked after. You need to go down a long stairs which means you have to go up on the way back. Even though it was a rather chilly November morning, by the time I went back up, I was really warm, perhaps due to the combination of a lovely hot onsen and good exerice of going up the stairs! If you would like to experience a real Japanese, then Shirahone Onsen is the place for you.

Nothing fancy, no views, but very clean and well maintained onsen. Very popular with locals. We were greeted at entrance, the pamphlet about bathing etiquette was handed to us, very helpful. Hot indoor pool quite big in size, no smells. There was also a cold bath. Outdoor pool smaller for some 4-5 people at most. Rest area to sit and relax afterward. We took a taxi back to Matsumoto as no bus service later in the evening, had to wait for it some 15 mins, ¥2000.
    Great experience.
