The road is closed to motorized vehicles on wednesday and saturdays. It is open from june to october. This old military road is just breathtaking. We cycled 34 km of dirt road with great joy. There is Casa dell’assietta, the only possibility to have food and drinks. They have cyclists menu ( super yummy).

I and my then current girlfriend spent a very satisfying and marvellously varied two weeks, housed in one of the apartments only some of which are rented out in this beautiful location with totally awe-inspiring views across the valley.

I was there predominantly for the skiing, but there are nature walks in the area, which my girlfriend enjoyed, and a regular bus service up to the main ski resort of Sestriere and, I believe, down into the valley. We were in my car, so I can't explain that in more detail.

There are good restaurants (we sampled "La Cioca"), a hotel and a local bar/convenience store within the complex, so your options are good and varied no matter your means of travel.

Sestriere forms part of the chain of cross-border Italian and French ski resorts called, in various languages, "The Milky Way", "La Via Lattea" and "La Voie Laiteuse". So, your skiing options are also many and varied.

Oh, and if you're quiet and in one of the lower apartments with balcony views of the slope below the complex, you may see deer, fawns and rabbits etc. foraging for food. There can also be flocks of crows or ravens that also pass by 'stunting' and generally making a racket, but the locales is generally extremely quiet and peaceful. This location is a veritable balm for the soul.

Is this enough to convince you? I'll upload some of my pictures if/when I can.

I've been constrained to 'claim' my visit was in 2012 when in fact it was 2010. If my then current GF had been easier to live with, I would have revisited with her each winter, and possibly both before and after the Christmas/New Year period, I was so enchanted by my accidental discovery.

We absolutely loved vialattea and Sauze D'Olux where we were based. I would go back in a heart beat.

The pistes are great - wonderful intermediate ski-ing - high bowls, long winding tree line pistes. Even on busy days lots of pistes empty - none of it feels dangerous or crowded.

Sauze/San sicario/ Sestreire really easy to trek around and visit in a day. We took bus to Montgenevre/ Claviere to get a days worth of ski-ing there.

Mountain restaurants are amazing - great food and drink at affordable prices (cheaper than where I live in Uk - we paying about 60 - 70 euro for lunch for family of 4)

We did have a great week weather wise. Cold and a little snow at beginning - sunny rest of week. Which meant snow receded alarmingly but vialattea did a great job preserving/ pisteing what they did have so tons of runs available.

The lift system is admittedly old, so not fast (I dont mind that, like a long, lazy chair ride). And has buttons - also fine if you are an intermediate skier - they basically have no queues so can offer great shortcuts. BUT I can see that it will be frustrating if weather is bad and you cant travel between areas - and not well thought out so that there are definite choke points (none of which take more than 10 minutes shuffling apart from Clotes lift - just avoid that amd take Sportinia on very busy days). And if you are intent on travelling distances, rather than doing lots of runs you would spend a lot of time on lifts or in queues.

This small church is very plain compared to the other church on the hill. If you want a place of worship it is fine but for charm and a pretty sight go to the other one.

Laura at YES was amazing with our son who is 5. Yes were great, they responded to my what's app messages and agreed to snowboard lessons for our son. By the end of the week he was linking turns, jumping and doing 360's. Laura was fun, kind and patient, our son loved his lessons. THANK YOU
