You don’t come to La Francesca for accommodations, you come for the location. There are good and bad things about La Francesca. I’ll start with the bad, then move in to the good. The Bad: The cottages are OLD, not recently updated, and not the cleanliest of places. Furnishings mismatched, no sense of decor. The beds are old, and somewhat dingy, terrible blankets and old, flat pillows. The couches are metal, fold-down cots, the blankets covering them are old. This dishes in the cabinet had been semi-washed, by what I assume was the last guest, and many were dirty still. The soap shell in the bathroom was slimy and full of water. The shower head dripped noisily. We stayed in early May, which is classified by the resort as low season, so the pools, mini market and bar were closed. Yet the resort doesn’t offer heating at this time of year. We encountered rainy, cold weather and inquired about heating, we were advised it would be €72 per day to have cabin heated. They want you to clean the place when you check out, yet supply no cleaning products, sponges, kitchen towels, toilet tissue or kitchen roll, so you have to buy those things yourself. They provide 1 bath towel and 1 hand towel per person with no change-outs. There are only two washers on the entire resort, one of which was broken with staff having no idea why or when it would be working again. The cost of the washer was €4 per load. If it rains, you can’t dry your laundry. I could go on. Suffice it to say this *could* be a nice resort IF they did a complete overhaul of the rental accommodations and amenities. As it is now, it’s pretty bad, at least our room was. The tennis courts, mini golf and children’s park are in bad need of repair. This resort was built in 1961 and many things around the place look like they haven’t been cared for in many years. If you stay on off season, we stayed in early May 2018, the mini-market and pool are closed, and restaurant is open for 2 hours per night. So you’ll need a car or you’ll be walking several (steep) KM and back to get food in nearby towns. Speaking of that - If you aren’t physically fit, this resort isn’t for you. Everything is either up a steep hill or down a steep slope, everything. We didn’t mind that so much, though were a young, fit couple and still lost our breath walking to and fro at La Francesca. I WOULD NOT STAY HERE AGAIN EVEN IF THE PRICE WERE 50€ per night simply based on the accommodations. The dinner in the restaurant is over priced and not made to order. There are limited choices and they seem to pre-cook everything; our food was brought to us not 3 minutes after ordering each time. It was an OK meal, but not worth €20 per person. Save your money and eat in Bonassola. The Good: The hot water in our cabin worked well once it got hot, the water pressure was decent. The location is gorgeous. Tucked into a hillside overlooking the sea. The silence, the smells of green, florals and ocean water. It could be bottled as a perfume. The views from the La Francesca houses closest to the seaside are breathtaking. In early May the weather is warm, mild and should be great unless you encounter a rainy spell, during which it becomes quite cold. The beach area, though small, is quite nice. There is a peaceful feeling here, safe and quiet compared to the previous week we spent in Naples in the city center. Levanto and the smaller Bonassola are each about an 45 mins walk along the seaside. Levanto is a beautiful seaside town with a children’s park, shopping, plenty of places to eat, a few grocery markets, and a nice, large pebble beach. Bonassola is smaller, even more beautiful, a closer walk, with several dining options and a small grocery market. Levanto is better for shopping, Bonassola is better for atmosphere. The free WiFi worked well in the cottage, so there’s that. We appreciated that most people we encountered spoke English. There are many places to stay near Levanto and Bonassola that I imagine would offer the same ‘place magic’ that La Francesca does, with better accommodations, service and amenities. Book at your own risk. I almost feel bad leaving such negative feedback, but facts are facts. This resort is OLD and need some serious work to bring it back to the loveliness I’m sure it once was. Ultimately, we checked out 2 days early due to the cold rain and moved to Levanto so we could have heat and not have to hike up and down the mountain in the rain when we needed something in town. The staff didn’t even ask why we were leaving early (non-refundable), they just didn’t care.…
