I just returned from six nights at Casa Chilenne, which I booked last minute for a writing retreat, returning to Cortona after an eighteen-year absence. I could not have chosen a better place to stay or found a more perfect hostess. I look forward to a return trip! Here are the reasons you should book your Cortona stay here (many of which have already been noted in the many glowing reviews below): Location: The B&B is located close to the end of the only flat, and main street in Cortona, where most of the shops, bars and restaurants are located (and an excellent gelateria a few steps from the front door). The primary entry point for cars in the traffic-limited centro storico is at this end of the street in Piazza Garibaldi (with some of the best views overlooking the valley), which is not only useful for meeting tour guides for trips out of town but is the drop-off and pick-up location for the shuttle (1.50 each way) to the train station. It's an easy two-minute walk with your luggage to the front door. The house is a good midpoint from the main piazza to the right five minutes walking, and the local park to the left five minutes walking, with fountain, benches and more views. Accommodations: Chairlifts on all of the staircases ideal for those with mobility issues, and handy for transporting luggage up and down. Rooms are spotlessly clean and well-appointed, with great lighting, generously-sized bathroom with plenty of space on a separate cabinet to spread out all my toiletries, very good water pressure and no issues with water temperature--I like a HOT shower, ample closet space (well-designed), and well-functioning AC. I was in "Il Nido"--the Nest--on the top floor, which also had a small balcony opening to the back courtyard. As noted by other reviewers, outside of that room is a communal living space and kitchen, as well as a roof terrace, which I had to myself for all but the last day of my stay; however, after 10pm it is to be used exclusively by whoever is in the top floor guest room. I did have an issue with my bed the first night as I prefer a little more cushioning and a softer pillow, and Jeanette rectified it immediately by adding a memory foam and finding the perfect soft pillow to add to the 4 already in the room. Breakfast: Best breakfast I've ever had in a B&B. Eggs, waffles, pancakes, bacon, made to order and cooked perfectly. Yogurt, granola, fresh fruit, Italian meats and cheeses, fresh- breads, home-baked muffins and pastries, cakes and tarts. Wonderful cappuccino and a full bottle of water at the table each morning. Jeannette: Having worked in the tourist industry even before she and her husband decided to open a B&B, it's clear that Jeannette knows how to take care of travelers. Aside from well-thought out restaurant recommendations, and information about local events that one might have missed, she provided a warm, welcoming atmosphere for all. Moreover, without my asking, she offered a small discount because I had booked a longish-stay at the last-minute. She was also immediately responsive when I was making the booking late at night two days before my arrival. I stay in well over a dozen hotels/inns/B&B's a year, and I have no hesitation giving Casa Chilenne five big stars and two very big thumbs up. Thank you ,Jeannette, for a lovely stay!…
