A local friend set us up with Mubwiza courts. His aunt owns the place, and as soon as we arrived she made us feel at home. For only $15 a night, you would be making a mistake to stay at a higher end hotel in Kigali. The service, views, and food there is unmatched by any hostel I have ever stayed at (20+ throughout Europe). Jerome is the host and he ensures your stay is excellent. He switched our room for us so we could enjoy and amazing view of Kigali, at no charge mind you. One morning we had to be up at 5am to go on a safari, which he also helped organize by speaking with the guide. The cook wasnt in that early, so he literally ran from the gate, up to the kitchen, boiled eggs for us and made a to-go breakfast. I doubt anyone at a hotel in Kigali would do that. In addition, he allowed us to keep our bags in our hostel room without charging us a night when we left for a night to Gisenyi. Another night, quite late, we needed fresh water and he took it upon himself to boil and fill up our bottles. Finally, he allowed us to check out a later time due to a late (11pm) departure from Kigali. We had no problem giving Jerome a hefty tip at the end of our stay. But the service doesn't end with him. The cooks there were always friendly and provided a breakfast that would cost easily 15 USD in America. Omelette, toast, jam, african tea, and a fresh smoothie were the standard breakfast, at the time of your choice as well. I occasionally stopped down in the kitchen and the guys were there are always friendly and quick to start conversation. They would often give me traditional snacks to try. The staff at Mubwiza courts take personal pride in ensuring your stay in Rwanda is the best experience possible. The service there is comparable to that of an upscale hotel. The whole time I had Jeromes whats app number and anything we needed he would help. As I arrived back in America, he texted me and my friend to make sure we made it back safely. Talk about going above and beyond the necessary duties of hotel staff! To me, this is an added bonus when traveling. Sure, you can stay in a hotel, cozy up in your room at night and pretend you are in a 1st world country. But I prefer to sacrifice a bit of that comfort in exchange for a unique experience interacting with friendly staff and make friends like Jerome that I can keep in contact with years down the road.…
