As a University academic from Scotland I was looking for somewhere to bring a small group (seven of us) to stay centrally in Kigali to use as a base. I've stayed in several hotels around Kigali and Kiyovu in particular over the years, but Stipp Hotel seemed like a good balance between price, location and facilities for our needs. I will admit I was a little cautious as there were very few reviews and not much information about the hotel online, but decided to make the booking in any case. First of all, after contacting the hotel in advance to arrange airport transfer, they replied quickly, and on arrival they were waiting for us in the hotel bus. Perfect. Now there is no glossing over the fact that in the hotel itself the public areas, the bar / restaurant and pool areas are quite tired and need some care and attention. But to be fair, this is all cosmetic and not serious. The rooms were again quite tired, but very comfortable and spacious with everything you need from a hotel in this price range. Beds are very comfortable also. Food is good in the hotel. It does have to be said that it takes a long time from order to arriving at your table, maybe an hour or so, but when it does arrive the food is great, and definitely value for money. I've seen some people complaining a little about breakfast, but for us it was excellent! Every morning (we stayed for a week) a table of 7 was set for us, and we had a selection of tea or coffee, bread and pastries or pancakes, cereal, fruit, cheese, and plain or Spanish omelettes. Plenty and a decent selection. In the evening, beer, wine or spirits from the bar without a problem no matter what time we arrived back to the hotel. The best thing about the hotel though was the staff. Very professional and friendly all the time whether reception, housekeeping, bar or management. A couple of times we had to use the hotel bus at short notice and it was never a problem. The staff were by far the best thing about the hotel and all are a credit to the place. So all in all, a good stay. I can understand some initially being put off by the cosmetic features, but at the end of the day, you can have an ultra-modern hotel where the staff are awful (been there), and that is definitely not the case here, where you will be made to feel at home. Hopefully we will be back again in the future.

Had the pleasure of staying at Stipp Hotel 7 years ago and really enjoyed our visit.....this trip on 20th September 2019 was a huge mistake. It was a total nightmare from the minute we arrived. Totally rundown if it were a kennal for boarding dogs I would have refused to allow my dog stay there. No fridge, safe not working, no light in bathroom, no tea or coffee, when we did get it was told we had to pay for milk. This is a hotel that should be closed for health and safety reasons it is not fit to accommodate humans.

I booked 3 beds for my family through airbnb. I received the confirmation of booking and payment. When my family arrived at the hotel, they told them they didn't have any reservation, and after 30 they "found it". The next day, when they were checking out, they didn't let them leave the hotel because they hadn't received the payment. I sent them the receipt, confirmation, everything.. they didn't believe us. I told them I had chatted with this Jonathan, who they apparently knew and had worked with him before, and told me that they weren't working with him before. I understand this Jonathan might have advertise the hotel in airbnb, but it is the hotel responsability to follow up and make sure the hotel is off the website. They told me I had to contact Jonathan and deal with him, but that I had to pay if I wanted to leave. So I ended up paying again. To sum up, I paid twice and the hotel didn't even bother to contact their friend Jonathan and solve the problem. Not coming again. And don't book this hotel via airbnb.

This was probably the worst hotel we stayed in during our 4 weeks in East Africa, and it was one of the more expensive ones! This had to be the hardest bed I have ever slept in. We had to check to see if there was a mattress as it felt like we were sleeping on the box spring. The rooms and hotel looked like there has not been any work on it in the last 30 years. Food was terrible, we ordered a pizza and it was inedible. Breakfast was not very good and we couldn't even bother having breakfast even though it was included our last day. Another reviewer said the pool looked like lemonade and I couldn't agree anymore! I would not even stick my feet in it. Don't get into a TV show/movie as the channels kept changing on their own! There was a small grocery store down the street which was nice for getting snacks/drinks Staff were a bit unfriendly Wifi was spotty

So the airport transfer was great, the manager himself located and picked me up. The hotel check in was simple and I got into my room inside 5 minutes. First impression was average looking, could have been a bit more ambient but at least it looked clean and free of bugs. Took a nap and was interrupted by a knock, had been allocated the wrong room in our group block booking so was relocated to another room. The aircon didnt work so a fan was brought in. The power points also didnt work as was the case with some of the lights. These were fixed in day two of the 5 night stay. Room service for anything was slow and the staff seemed not to understand English well. Also noticed they hardly greet guests when you meet in the corridors, which is awkward. Breakfast was decent with sufficient protein and fruit variety. Had one meal, dinner, it was ok. The wifi was below average in performance. To their credit they have a small gym onsite and a decent pool. Frankly, they could do so much better with this hotel. It has a great quiet location reasonably near a Nakumatt Supermarket and walking distance to a great coworking space called the Office. Also about 10 minutes drive to the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

My wife and I stayed here the last few days of our holiday in Rwanda and: * The place is beautiful and in a beautiful neighborhood - at least looking in and on the websites * Staff opening and shutting doors at all hours of the night and morning. If the doors were properly done, then it wouldn't be a problem. instead, we were woken up every time this happened. all night. long. * Was promised a mosquito net and AC. Instead, had to beg for a fan to make sure the mosquitos didn't have a human meat buffet. They couldn't find the AC controls. Mosquito nets were never even considered and got a *shrug* from staff * The couch didnt have any cushions. Like, none. Just the raw frame * Bathroom was in a state of disrepair * No towels or toilet paper * Curtains didnt shut all of the way - wakey wakey 6 AM! * Bed was basically a block of wood with a thin mattress on top * The pool looked downright scary (looked like cloudy lemonade) * The breakfast. Well, the fruit wasn't bad. Until the hostess insisted on telling me I was cutting my fruit wrong. Positive things: * Hot water was actually hot * Beautiful scenery * They didn't complain when we ordered hellofood/jumia (food.jumia.rw) My wife and I even had a comparative discussion on where does this rank on the list of crappy hotels we've stayed at around the world (we've traveled extensively). A close 2nd - right behind the hotel (guest room?) that was 10m from a mosque (call to prayer) and right ahead of the hostel in Bangkok where they lock your luggage behind the front desk because it would be stolen from your room. DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE WE DID!!!!!

If you are keen to stay in a filthy run down hotel, this is the place for you. Only by staying here can you truly experience the want of cleanliness. My first room (I moved) had three double beds. Dilemma number one was to choose which one actually had clean sheets. This ordeal was made more exciting by the need to move unnecessary furniture to reach each bed. The moving of furniture only served to make more of the carpet visible; another mistake. Dilemma two, at what point do I remove my shoes? This one was easily resolved, not when required to walk on the filthy carpet. The room was dark and had a musty smell. I thought this was bad, then I entered the bathroom. A novel experience for someone used to such places being spotlessly clean. The once white bath was now stained brown. The shower was functional but leaked badly. It was not clean and as such required the user to have a shower without touching the sides. Not for the inflexible! The toilet whilst clean, had an appalling smell. Room two was not much better. It was cleaner by virtue of it having a tiled floor. The one double bed looked as dishevelled as the three in the previous room. No choice this time! The two 'once white' towels were less than white. Stains aplenty, they appeared never to have been washed. Equally as dark and musty, it was not much of an improvement. Several of the plug sockets didn't function. Light bulbs were missing and when present, some didn't work. I will say the staff were polite, helpful and friendly. I expect more for $140 USD.

It is a pity to see how badly this place is run. The buildings are actually quite interesting, and the fantastic greenery that keeps growing over and amongst the volumes is one of its biggest assets. The hotel is spread over a number of domestic-sized pavilions that remind me of the jagged skyline of Jacobsen's Søholm row houses, including their topiary landscape of 3D hedge. There are some typological complexities like a ground floor covered parking with buildings on top (in clumsier hands this would have been a basement) or the stepping down public area, from lobby to restaurant, veranda, pool, pool bar, garden. But the experience is terrible. I had no hot water, and just a trickle of cold. My complaint at reception was received with good manners but no action. My room was humid. I tried to ventilate but the window with mosquito net was stuck and looked like it had not been operated in years. Breakfast is sad; there is an expresso machine, but I was told it died. The edge of the pool is all broken, the water greenish, the nice pool bar not really working. Pity.

Hotel was great location, staff were helpful. We had a large room with three double beds. The bathroom was tired and needs updating but was clean. The hotel said they had airport transfer but we were told it would cost $20 and would be a taxi, not free as in their details. We stayed late December but there was very few people staying.

Stayed there for 3 nights in September 2015. Very good location, quiet and homely. Can't comment on the meals as I didn't eat much there. The TV was a letdown. They have someone controlling channels from another planet. You ate watching a good movie and the you see your screen changing to some sports. Other than that I woukd stay there again.
