Don't expect refined food, but if you look for good honest food with the ambiance of a Swiss pub, this is the place for you.More
Thanks for your reply. Our concept in the Bären is traditional food - not refined food. The Restaurant Bären is full of tradition and one of the oldest restaurants in the city of Zug. It is located in the heart of the new town on...More
Bären is my favorite Restaurant in Zug, since I moved here 5 years ago. I regularly go there with friends and family, and sometimes also for business if I want a more informal setting. It is a genuine old-fashioned "Wirtshaus" (inn), where some local people...spend the evening playing cards - a traditional pastime in the Alps, but all too often no longer tolerated by Restaurant owners that prioritize Revenue over "Gemütlichkeit" (comfyness?). Not so in the Bären, and the traditional atmosphere is also underscored by nice decoration with ancient cooking and farming utensils. They have all the Swiss classics, including Cordon Bleu in several varieties, where my own favorits is the "Zuger Cordon Bleu" with an intense "Zugerbergkäse". In Winter you also absolutely must take a "Nüsslisalat". The local beer is from Baar, the neighbouring town and also quite good.More

This is definitely a restaurant on my „to do“ list after I heard the story! Restaurant „Bären“ meaning grizzly (not Baren) is a quite iconic institution in Zug. It is said that around 1900, when there was no „public transport“ WHATSOEVER! the then host put...small cups of liquor on the windowsill so the regional manufacturing workers - after sometimes a more than an hour long commute on foot - ingested a strengthening substance before turning up to work... Up until the owner imposed a smoking ban it was rather renowned as a traditional Swiss „Beiz“ with cigarillo smoking, card playing locals. The latest hosts - and that s where it becomes interesting - were Austrians from Salzburg. Now, you may not know the Austrian cuisine apart from the famous „Wiener Schnitzel“ but from own experience it is a sumptious, very rich and delicious cuisine. Why is it on my „to do“ list? Someone told me their steak is highly recommended and the cook confirmed that they are serving it on a „hot stone“ in different sizes (ladies‘ cut, regular and „Bären cut“ ;-)More

I love love love love looooooooooove Cordon Bleu here, I am excited every time to eat it! Epic, amazing, great, wonderful, wooooow However, the service is very unfriendly, it is one of the few restaurants where you get told off by the waitresses for small...things, which I find incredible. But there is nothing that can prevent me from coming to this restaurant for this epic Cordon Bleu. Because of the service they do not really deserve 5 points, but I am sorry, the Cordon Bleu is not just a 5, it is a 6, it exceeds perfect. Therefore, despite horrible service, the place gets a 5 simply because the cordon bleu is so outstandingMore
We stopped here for dinner on our last night 8n Zug and it was truly a localot place. We loved our schnitzel and the portions were generous.
Good value for money. Food is good to average. Not much options in terms of poultry and vegetarian. Desserts are huge and delicious.Staff can come across quite discriminatary, not sure if it's the language barrier or racial.
Excellent food and worth its money, interior is very nice, kind of ancient, staff friendly and helpful
We go to the Bären regularly for the beef filet on the hot stone. We believe it is high quality food for a decent price. The Bären Restaurant is very centrally located and the service is very good. They also have plenty of typical Swiss...dishes like Cordon Bleu wich are excellent as well.More
This is an excellent, very busy schnitzel house with a good array of cordon bleu. My selection was filled with ham and rachlete cheese - cooked to perfection. My colleague had a delightful steak on a hot stone. The place seemed popular with both locals...and expats. Without a doubt, the best meal I had over 3 nights in Zug.More
Good place to visit if you would like to embrace the local kitchen. Nothing fancy, just good local food.
If you are not that keen on cheese and its smell, probably you should not come here. One of their specialties are cheese fondues....and you and your clothes will smell for some time. Their cordon bleu are very good though, especially the one with spicy...cheese. This is VERY Swiss, and staff does not speak that good English, but it deserves a visit.More
Went to this restaurant last Saturday night with my husband and a friend for dinner. My husband had the barley soup for a starter and our friend had the mixed salad. Both large portions and tasty. For the main course we all had Cordon Bleu....I had the house cordon bleu and the other two had the cordon bleu with chilis. We all enjoyed our cordon bleus. They were served with vegetables and French fries. Again large portions and plenty to eat. For dessert we shared fried apple rings. They were delicious. Throughout the night we enjoyed beers and wine. For Zug the price was reasonable especially for the quality and portion sizes. The service was wonderful- friendly and efficient. No issues with English. The menu and website are in English too. I made reservations . There was a house band playing that evening. Fun entertainment. Luckily we live in Zug and will return here again for another dining experience.More
The food is delicious, ask for gluten- and lactosefree food and the cook will gladly adjust the menu for you. The staff is adorable, the ambience very cosy and informal. Whether you prefer a quick lunch or a dinner with friends or colleagues, Bären is...always a great choice.More
